The driver for a AMD Radeon RX580 GPU is available for Ubuntu 16.04 on AMD's website. I was wondering if it's going to work on my KDE neon computer, since it's based on Ubuntu 16.04? Also is the installation procedure is the same as Ubuntu?
Thanks in advance, Fred |

Should work fine, since Neon is based on Ubuntu 16.04. However, unless there's a specific reason, most people will use the open source drivers built into the kernel (AMDGPU). The version you are referencing is the proprietary version (AMDGPU-PRO). The great thing about using the open source one is that you can pretty much use any kernel you want and not worry much about the graphics stack and it's associated drivers. You're also not locked into using the version of Ubuntu that is supported by the proprietary driver. If, for some reason, you need bleeding-edge open source drivers, there are PPA's for that as well.

@dequire,
Thanks for getting back to me so soon. This is getting a little over my head. Can I activate the PPA in the Synaptic Package Manager, and what am I actually activating? Could you give me more specific instructions as how to do this? Thanks in advance, Fred |

Sure
![]() In simplest terms, for your RX 580, you do not need to install anything! No drivers needed. I know this concept can be hard for someone coming from another OS, but in Linux, the underlying system is the kernel. And in the case of AMD graphics, the drivers are built-in and the correct ones are used on boot-up. AMD also does offer proprietary drivers, which can be downloaded from their website. However in almost all cases, the open source ones are as good as the proprietary (closed) ones from AMD. AMD's goal is to eventually move their drivers to all open source, however being a complex beast like video, some parts remain closed and therefore must be relegated to the AMD website. As I stated earlier, your card will work fine just by turning it on and using it. It will also handle gaming and video and most ordinary things people use computers for. Also, as alluded to earlier, when it comes time to upgrade, like in April when Neon moves to the new Ubuntu LTS base - 18.04 - you won't have to do anything! Your Neon system will make sure you're using the correct driver... Here's another (brief) explanation: https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/7b7hoy/difference_between_amd_gpu_drivers/ Unless there's a specific reason to download the driver from AMD, or you have other questions or issues, you're already all set. |

I Installed the AMD RX580, and it does run, but I think it's running the generic software. There is no mention of AMD driver When I check the driver manager.
As you see it sees the graphic card info, but it's not running on it. So how do install the generic software for that? inxi info: Machine: System: Gigabyte product: H97-D3H Mobo: Gigabyte model: H97-D3H-CF v: x.x Bios: American Megatrends v: F7 date: 09/19/2015 CPU: Quad core Intel Core i7-4790 (-HT-MCP-) cache: 8192 KB flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 28733 clock speeds: max: 4000 MHz 1: 4000 MHz 2: 3799 MHz 3: 3966 MHz 4: 3823 MHz 5: 4000 MHz 6: 3972 MHz 7: 4000 MHz 8: 3990 MHz Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Device 67df bus-ID: 01:00.0 Display Server: X.Org 1.19.5 drivers: ati (unloaded: fbdev,vesa,radeon) Resolution: 1440x900@59.89hz GLX Renderer: Radeon RX 580 Series (AMD POLARIS10 / DRM 3.9.0 / 4.10.0-42-generic, LLVM 5.0.0) GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 17.2.4 Direct Rendering: Yes |
