How many Neon installs are there?

Tue May 01, 2018 10:57 am
From KDE Neon FAQ
How many installs of KDE neon are there?
We include the machine ID in version update requests in /etc/update-manager/meta-release and hope to have a website up shortly which shows figures on install numbers.
This will be added as an option in the installer when we get a moment.

Probably a Dev Team question... but is there an answer published somewhere?
Or is it still on a roadmap to do?

I am curious about if someone only added the neon user edition repos as I did to Mint KDE 18.3 does this show as an "install"? Either way I am happy to say it has been working flawlessly and is great to have the latest version and bugfixes for Plasma 5, KDE apps, and qt5. Since there will be no KDE version of Mint 19 I will be switching to Neon UE full time when the upgrade to 18.04 base is released.

Thanks very much! :) I have been tinkering about with Neon since it was first introduced at first in virtual machines and then in it's own partition. Since the KDE Slimbook was introduced it became clear that Neon was going to be an on going project (even tho they claim it is not a true "distro") and one that I could enjoy the community as well as the "non-distro". The reason I was first drawn to Neon was the "cutting edge" Plasma 5 desktop on a stable Ubuntu base and minimal preinstalled programs. The more I used Neon the more I liked it. The quickly updated bugfixes that are made daily instead of having to wait for days or weeks are fantastic. 8)

I have been on Neon for a good year or so and have been happy with it. The only thing which got more and more annoying were the issues I had with my dual monitor setup which was not working reliably.
I am pretty sure that my issues didn't have anything to do with Neon but rather the underlying Ubuntu LTE platform. But given that Neon focuses only on KDE/Plasma and not the underlying OS I was kind of stuck. After things became unbearable (I have to get work done with this machine). I bit the bullet again and reinstalled my OS, but because the Neon team wasn't making any annoucements about their plans for 18.04 until yesterday or so, I decided to give Kubuntu a try.

Thinking about this some more I think Kubuntu is probably the better platform for me anyway:
- Neon and Kubuntu are both on the same stable Plasma release right now
- Always running the latest and greatest KDE apps is not that important to me because my most important apps aren't KDE anyway. I will pick what works best for me no matter what platform.
- Same with bugfixes, I liked the frequent fixes for Plasma but I feel more comfortable with a distribution which will update the Ubuntu base and Plasma instead of just the plasma / KDE part.

Well, I'll see if things work out as expected. For now I am enjoying my 18.04 KDE experience and my dual monitor issues are gone.

KDE Neon should get the same base system updates as Kubuntu since they share the same Ubuntu repos. My personal choice is Neon User Edition over the LTS version since the KDE apps and qt5 are updated as quickly as Plasma itself and I don't have to wait until they are added to the LTS repository. Dolphin 18.04 is light years ahead of most linux file managers.

Ah, yes, what I meant was that even the Neon user edition is based on Ubuntu LTE isn‘t it? Which means I didn‘t get the option to move to 17.10 in case this would have fixed my dual monitor issues. Although, given what I heard about 17.10 this probably would not have been a smart move anyway :-)
Or in other words, Neon may be fast to update everything KDE and apparently whatever gets added to Ubuntu LTE, but one will miss out on the Ubuntu non LTE releases.

The catch with Kubuntu versus KDE Neon is that Kubuntu LTS is supported for 3 years only (as it is with all Ubuntu editions except the "main" Ubuntu), however since KDE Neon is using Ubuntu Core LTS it means it is supported for 5 years. Did I understand this right?

So from that perspective it would make more sense to stick to KDE Neon.

I already looked but couldn't find any other mention than what's in the FAQ. So has it already been announced when KDE Neon based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be available as installation image?

Other than this comment in the FAQ--and on the blog--I haven't seen a date... but the reasons are clear enough!
Yes we are compiling our packages and starting to make images based on 18.04 now. The ability to upgrade will be turned on when we are satisfied it is reliable to do so.

OK, just have discovered the blog, which may be better for keeping an eye on instead of the FAQ. ;)

Anyway, I just hope that the new release is already around the corner, because it would not make sense now to start installing the current version.

Ooph. This thread sure went off topic.

To answer the original question: the data is not public and currently not being evaluated as the project was left abandoned https://phabricator.kde.org/T2845

Annoyed with bbcode since 1999.

It sure did... but that is how conversational threads go sometimes
But at least someone--you--got around to pointing this back in the right direction, so a big thank you!

Looking at that T2845 page--where a stats url no longer exists--and the Neon FAQ, I guess that was why I asked... as the latter seems to indicate that it's a forthcoming attraction; maybe the Q&A re how many installs are there should be removed; so as not to create that expectation (at least for us newbies to Neon)
;)
