Kde Neon upgrade to 18.04

Tue May 29, 2018 5:49 pm
I'm using KDE neon User Edition 5.12, It is possible to upgrade to 18.04? I can't find any relevant info and do-release-upgrade doesn't upgrade.

Thank you for any advices.

Re: Kde Neon upgrade to 18.04  Topic is solved

Not yet, but...........

https://neon.kde.org/faq#bionic

Will you update the base to Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver?

Yes we are compiling our packages and starting to make images based on 18.04 now. The ability to upgrade will be turned on when we are satisfied it is reliable to do so.

Thx for reply and link, the other thing is, that I didn't know about pkcon commands:
Code: Select all
pkcon refresh
pkcon update

I always used apt, so nice to know.

Like I said before, the ouput of pkcon refresh and pkcon update is sometimes a bit messy on terminal.
I recommend:

pkcon refresh
pkcon get-updates (optional, only if you want to see new packages)
sudo pkcon update -y

@TKL-Ansi,
I updated a couple of computers using the "pkcon refresh", and "pkcon update". Then I saw your comment on using the "sudo pkcon update -y".
I clearly saw the difference as far as "being messy on the terminal" as you mentioned! I din't get the mess using the "sudo pkcon update -y".
I'm just curious as to how or where did you find that information? And thanks for sharing that.

I'm glad you like it.
Code: Select all
pkcon -h

"-y, --noninteractive Install the packages without asking for confirmation"

I just tried -y and noticed better output.
that error message at the end is created by the gui which asks you for password, so I decided to use sudo

"get-updates" is in the man pages (man pkcon).

Just a question : What if we edit the sources list file replacing Xenial with Bionic ? Did anyone try that ?

This will not work (at least for 'user'), the directory of versions for which neon/user is compiled:

http://archive.neon.kde.org/user/dists/

For neon dev/stable some packages are already rebuilt, but not all of them:

https://archive.neon.kde.org/dev/stable/dists/

You are going to break your system if you do that. If this was ready to be tested we'd publicly ask for testing.

I did this a few weeks ago (just to play as I was planning a fresh install anyway and had backed up my data) and it wrecked my sysyem - which then wouldn't boot!

Yeap! I tried that some days ago in kde neon dev unstable, for which there are already testing packages for bionic:

https://archive.neon.kde.org/dev/unstable/dists/

There were some broken packages during the update so I neeeded to remove these and I ended up with no X.org in my attempt to fix these. I didn't have time to reinstall X.org and all other removed packages but I guess this can be done :)

Wait, but there also Bionic under Stable dists!

Does it mean?... Does it mean something?

No :)
They have already stated that they have some packaging done. It is the upgrade part that is still in progress.
