Hi all. I have a 2yo HP Laptop. AMD, 8 gig ram, 1TB HDD. Start time is 60 seconds. Wondering about others times. Thanks

First generation KDE Slimbook:15s (about 7s of those are spent in UEFI/GRUB; about 4 seconds from there to SDDM, and then about 4 seconds to Plasma)

Annoyed with bbcode since 1999.

Probably because Neon is optimized for the Slimbook.

Edit: Or the Slimbook is really that fast. Has arm architecture if I recall correctly.

Interesting. Are there any arm images available for download? https://build.neon.kde.org/view/iso/

The slimbook doesn't have an ARM processor, and I also didn't do special boot performance optimizations on it (I was the person working on the 1st Generation). You'll see about the same boot performance on all systems with an SSD and a reasonably modern CPU. The primary bootleneck for any boot will be disk IO, close second is usually CPU clock rate/core count.

My XPS 13 boots in 14 seconds.

Mileage may vary of course as installing additional services (apache/docker/...) will cause extra disk IO which slows the entire boot down.

Nah, but they are also building for arm.

http://kde.slimbook.es/

So yeah, Slimbook has amd64 architecture and it's really that fast.

Thanks Harald. That has clarified it. Keep up the great work. You're awesome.

Edit: Yes, we are aware of Slimbook II, which is even faster than the previous one.

Hi, I wish whether you can consider to send us the output of the following command in order to compare boot times.
systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 6.705s (kernel) + 26.577s (userspace) = 33.282s

Oh, well, I remembered shortly after leaving. The arm images are for the Pinebook (Slimbook's little brother). Silly me.

As for my system, boot time is satisfactory. I'm yet to measure it though. ;)

You'll see about the same boot performance on all systems with an SSD

Yeah, a good SSD makes a noticeable difference, for sure.

Code: Select all
systemd-analyze

We're always learning something. Much appreciated.
