Firefox to old

Tue Aug 07, 2018 11:26 am
Hi!

Firefox (Neon User 16.04) is annoying me because it complains about being to old. What can I do except waiting for Neon on 18.04?

In the standard repo from 16.04 firefox is up to date:
Code: Select all
apt-cache policy firefox
firefox:
  Installiert:           61.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1
  Installationskandidat: 61.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 61.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 500
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates/main amd64 Packages
        500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-security/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     45.0.2+build1-0ubuntu1 500
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages

Maybe xenial-updates is missing in your apt sources?

I download Firefox manually and uninstall the "Ubuntu" version. I always get updates like Windows/Mac users and don't have to wait for the latest stable to be added to repos.

The current version of Firefox on KDE Neon (coming from Ubuntu Xenial) is 61.0.1 (at the moment of typing).
I've just navigated to Mozilla's and it says:
Congrats! You’re using the latest version of Firefox.

If you want the absolute latest, purest Firefox, then you can get it from Mozilla's.

Good for you. Have you installed it system-wide?

Hi, drboheme and koldster
You could find out in a terminal that Firefox is up to date. Whent I run this command under terminal
firefox -v
I found
Mozilla Firefox 61.0.1
Do you consider that it was an important improvement between this version and the actual (62), from a security point of view?
I understand your point of view, but this is neither Windows or Mac. Otherwise, you could consider to install a rolling release GNU/Linux distro but you also have to be patient, because they are maintained by almost free time developers.

@j8a I agree with you on this one. This is pretty much a non-issue but it's good for people to know that they have alternatives.

@j8a & raddison:
I have done this method for years now and it is a matter of personal choice. Do I feel that waiting on devs to add the latest stable release is wrong? The answer is no but as I stated I prefer a version of Firefox that hasn't been "Ubuntualized" when using the distros based on Ubuntu. I also do this with Debian or Arch based distros so it is ultimately computing done my way. I appreciate the developers time and effort but prefer "my way". Yes, raddison, it is installed system-wide and will automatically update if set to in preferences. Very simple to do, just download the tarball and extract it. Make sure that you edit the Menu item for Firefox to point to the folder that contains the extracted Firefox. Then you can use Synaptic or commandline to remove and purge the version shipped with the distro.

Thanks for all advice!

I have Firefox 59.0.1 No idea, why it was not updated to 61. I never had this behaviour before. Normally I am well pleased with the version of Firefox from the repos of KDE Neon.

Now I deinstalled and reinstalled Firefox. Now I have version 61.0.1 but I lost plasma-integration. I can not find the package firefox-plasma anymore. Hm...

You need to have plasma integration in Neon and this add-on. If Firefox does not receive an add-on then the author of this add-in must update it for a newer version. I do not see the purpose of this add-on if it's always dependent on the version of Firefox, plus it's all that's done without it.

Now the problem is solved. I was misunderstanding, that p-b-i brings me file-dialogue, too. So I thought, I would no longer need plasmazilla and deleted that repo. Of course, there was no updated firefox then. Now I learned, that kde-file-dialogue can not be done with p-b-i. So I reeanabled plasmazilla-repo, installed latest firefox-plasma and all is well again.
Sorry - and thanks to all who work on Plasma, Firefox and their integration this way or another.

@kdeoldster Just for the record: I dislike the ubuntulized Firefox.
