Well, in my opinion the lowest of the lowest specs it's worth installing onto and still have decent but sub-optimal user experience is:

- Core 2 Duo 2.8 - 3 Ghz
- 4 Gigs of DDR2
- 160 Gigs mechanical hard drive
- OpenGL 2 compliant graphics
- 1080p monitor (desktop computer)

Anything bellow aforementioned specs is objectively painful.


Please take note that, when it comes down to specs, things can be tricky. Hence, your comments as to what you think to be the lowest specs (based on your hands-on experience with Neon) are likely to be more important than your votes. Ideally, you only need to post once and only after giving it some thought. Thank you all.

To be taken with a pinch of salt as a chipset that does not have bottlenecks and/or a SSD can significantly boost performance.

lowest specs i used was:
dual core @ 2,16 ghz, 2 GB ram, SSD

a netbook similar in specs with chromebooks

before that it had the following OSes... windows10, ubuntu 16 lts, elementary, deepin, which were all a bit slow, only Neon worked like a charm.

8 year old HP cheap "business class" laptop and KDE neon is super fast (considering the hardware) and at "idle" cpu usage is 1-2% and memory usage drops to @450MIB

and come to think about it ... my old eeepc with only 1GB ram and 1,66 Ghz dual-core intel processor runs deepin just fine, so it should run neon perfectly, i can`t test it right now, but someone on the comment section said it works for him on exactly those specs.

the lowest spec pc for kde neon I use is a hp netbook

I run KDE Neon on a dirt cheap, going on six year old Asus N2840 laptop with 2Gb RAM.

It's not unusable but it's not good. The HDD was swapped out for a 1TB HDD but it's proven a slow device which I think hampers things. The RAM cannot be upgraded. All minimal specs save the sizable, but slow, HDD.

For general use it's, er, usable, just. What bothers me about all computing these days is the browser. There is no browser that is actually functional which does not eat up system resource. If I am offline I can do masses with KDE Neon and I use a lot of of software on the machine. Even video editing using Kdenlive is quite functional - see my mass of anime music videos at B-i-t-chute ALL done on the little laptop! Video playback is actually quite good even to 720 if I avoid VLC player - which seems somewhat incompatible, certainly not optimized for, KDE.

But once I run up even Slimjet the machine crawls and the HDD light thrashes. All modern browsers, thanks to Java and the like, consume RAM and CPU. Once I have the browser running I can forget multitasking!

So, in general use... KDE Neon on a 2GB cheap N2840 netbook/laptop runs OK as long as all desktop effects are turned off, otherwise it's impossible.

Can be a bit laggy but it's bearable. Boot time to desktop is very slow. Plasma 4 ran very happily on the machine, mind, but that was a long time ago.

But once you run a browser it gets painful. I hate how the internet got so bad.

Conversely, a more up to date n3350 equivalent machine with 4GB RAM runs absolutely fine! Again, I disable all desktop effects but then the machine is very usable.

Credit to the olde N2840, mind. It's been a reliable workhorse that has done so much it's unreal and certainly proven worth the absolute minimal cost. I hope to buy a 7,200RPM HDD at some point to make the old girl more usable but... I got a house to build so it's belt tightening time!

My dear padawan... Why torture yourself with mechanical disks? Buy yourself an SSD and enjoy the GIGANTIC speed boost.
