Some problem with apps in Neon

Thu Aug 23, 2018 8:55 am
Hi again Neon'ers,

I would like to ask you about your satisfaction with the KDE NEON system.
Is it fully one? Is it stabilized and polished Linux version? :o

I am curious about it as I stumble upon some problems that made my life harder in Neon. :(
I came from MINT KDE where I hadn't ponder what to set/change to have couple of my favorite apps working. I just installed them via console or .deb packages...

So my troubles are as follows:
- no GRUB fits into its place (system has to be started from additional UEFI option only) - I mentioned it in a separate thread

- I cannot use some of my favourite apps, for example:
$peazip
peazip: error while loading shared libraries: libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

$ blender
usr/lib/blender/blender: error while loading shared libraries: libopencv_highgui.so.2.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

and another nice program Wings3D doesn't start, etc.

Not all of them could be replaced by "portable" versions (.appimage, etc.). :(
What to do ? Is there any repository to add to NEON that makes it more compatible with Ubuntu/Mint ??? :O

When trying to fix above Peazip's or Blender's bugs, I can see some warnings like:
"some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming."

... and it seems they cannot be fixed to normal state. :( :< >:(

If you're asking about satisfaction, I would give Neon 10/10. IMO it's the best KDE Distro out there. However it is a bare metal install & does require a lot of tweaking & extra packages to get it how you like it.
Now to your issues. Firstly, what version of Neon have you installed. The one based on Ubuntu 16.04 packages or the later soon to be released one based on 18.04?
If your package base is 16.04, then all should be fine as both Mint KDE & the current stable version of Neon are based on that.
If it is the later 18.04, it could well be that the maintainer of those packages hasn't updated them yet, although Blender is in the official repo.
Also it helps to always try & use native packages rather than 3rd party ones. Instead of peazip, I use p7zip-full which again is in the repos.
Basically we need more info about what system you are using.

Hi, thanks for taking your time and answer.

I use KDE NEON user edit, and it is KDE 5.49.0 / Plasma 5.13.4. I guess it's compatible with older Ubuntu (Xenial).
I use NVIDIA 1060GTX and is it true that there are some problems with NVIDIA in Neon?

I found portable version for Blender (but it's older v2.78 only) and Peazip.

As for the zip program - it's a matter of taste which I like most, isn't it?

So is there any clear follow-up instructions to help in such matter ? :o

I think that both Xenial & Bionic images use KDE 5.49.0 / Plasma 5.13.4. So don't assume your using Xenial. When & where did you download your images from?
I'm using the Bionic version at present, so if you are using Xenial, it's hard for me to test your programs on my system.
I know what you say about a matter of taste, but the rule is, always use an official program from the repo's where possible, otherwise you can run into trouble with dependencies etc....
As far as clear follow up instructions, You will struggle. Neon is not for new users. A bit of experience is generally needed to get everything to your liking. That being said, it can be done, & is a useful learning curve, but takes time.
I would suggest if you want a full blown Distro, you're probably better using something like Kubuntu. Coming from LM it would probably fit better.

@Drayldan
Don't be :o. You just need some time to get used to Neon.
Please specify timestamp of image and whether it's Xenial or Bionic.
Example:
Code: Select all
useredition-20180823-0538 Bionic

With all due respect, if you don't do it like that, you're wasting space and time. Cheers. ;)

Well, it's obvious:
Code: Select all
$ lsb_release -a
LSB Version:    core-9.20160110ubuntu0.2-amd64:core-9.20160110ubuntu0.2-noarch:security-9.20160110ubuntu0.2-amd64:security-9.20160110ubuntu0.2-noarch
Distributor ID: LinuxMint
Description:    Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
Release:        18.3
Codename:       sylvia

With all due respect, if you don't do it like that, you're wasting space and time. Cheers. ;)

I don't understand what you meant here. I do like Neon for its "look and feel" and want to use it for some time. I am not "distro-hopper"
and I'm not total Linux beginner. I've been using Linux Mint KDE for couple of years but it came to end (KDE is discontinued there) .
I was trying to resolve the issues, but failed at this unfortunately. So I decided to ask here. Thanks a lot for taking time to everybody in this thread!
I do appreciate it much.

BTW. I've heard that moving to "Bionic" (the newest Neon release) would probably fix most of my annoyances with some favourite programs like
Blender, Peazip or Wings3D. Do you agree?
