Dear Neon Users,

Months and months ago Ubuntu took a snapshot of Debian Sid (unstable), "stabilised" it and called it Bionic. At the moment of typing, Debian Buster (testing) is far ahead of Bionic. When Buster goes stable, it will blow Bionic out of the pond, as it will be a light year ahead of Bionic. Ubuntu having produced a lot of rubbish lately as well as the incertitude surrounding the future of the Ubuntu Project are valid reasons to think ahead and consider re-basing Neon onto Debian 10 (as soon as it goes stable). Moreover, if KDE have any aspirations to be in the privacy software business, as they claim they are, that's all the more reason for letting go of Ubuntu as soon as possible. Let's face it: we've had it with Canonical or the Ubuntu Project. That's what I think, right there.

Kind Regards,
a Neon user :)

Uncertainty regarding the Ubuntu project? - Could you post back your sources for that info.
When Buster goes stable, it will blow Bionic out of the pond, as it will be a light year ahead of Bionic. - And then when Ubuntu 20.04 goes stable it will be a light year ahead of Buster.
Neon has to be based on something, & in my 10 years of using Linux, & IMO, Ubuntu has always been more stable & more user friendly than Debian, especially the LTS versions. For that reason I would leave as is for now. Neon is more than usable on the Ubuntu base. And you know what they say "If it aint broke....."

KDE neon has limited enough resources so why would they re-base so soon after an upgrade to Bionic Ubuntu? The mission of the KDE neon project seems to be pretty clear in the FAQ section of the website. "The latest Plasma 5 desktop and the latest KDE apps using a stable LTS Ubuntu base".

With all due respect nothing is carved into stone. I'll re-surface the subject from time to time so that more people can notice it. Don't forget to vote. Thank you all. ;)

i agree.

Ubuntu seems like a solid base right now, but in the future... who knows.

but from my personal perspective Ubuntu is a sinking ship for desktop users, and only interesting from a corporate point and the services they can provide. Most of their new products failed, the move to gnome was the last drop for many, even google droped them as a base for their internal OS, think about that for a second.

now RHEL is bought out, RHEL announces it will deprecate KDE by 2024.
and Ubuntu is next (sold or IPO) the real question is who will be the new masters... and what do you think is gonna happen then?

KDE definitely needs a backup plan, with all these things taking place. And by having that slimbook and plasma mobile project they definatly didn`t make any friends. In a way KDE reminds me of another company called Jolicloud. They had an OS (based on Ubuntu), a custom DE, it could be ran as a mobile app , and even hardware(netbooks running their OS), they had many big plans, untill Ubuntu and others dropped support, today the closest thing is the chromeOS/chromebook. I would hate to see KDE end up the same way as Jolicloud.
