Ubuntu 18.04.2 and Neon?

Fri Feb 15, 2019 10:41 am
Hi

With Ubuntu 18.04.2 now out, how do these updates roll-in to KDE Neon? For example, OMG Ubuntu reports you can upgrade to the 4.18 kernel and newer xorg packages with this command:

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04
Source: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2019/02/ubu ... s-released

Is this recommended in Neon, or does pkcon / Discover pull in these updates differently?

I'd like to take advantage of the new kernel but do not want to break my Neon installation by gong off piste so to speak!

Thanks
Nick

"Ubuntu LTS hardware enablement for KDE neon"-HOWTO:

1. Use "pkcon"-command:

$ man pkcon |& sed -n -E '/^[^[:alpha:]]+install /,/^$/ p'
install PACKAGES
Install the given packages from repositories.

2. Install:

$ sudo pkcon install linux-generic-hwe-18.04
$ sudo pkcon install xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04

3. Reboot.

That's all.

Enjoy.

We are still undecided. On 16.04 we did it the Ubuntu way and only enabled HWE for new installations. I am rather of the opinion that this split in behavior caused more confusion than it did good though - so there's a good chance we might actually update all systems with HWE this time around.
In any event you can install HWE using the command you mentioned and it'll be fine.

The command you posted works as well, you can also use pkcon of course. Either is fine in this case.

Annoyed with bbcode since 1999.

Thanks both for the feedback. I think I'll give it a go, installing with the pkcon method :)

One word of caution based on my experience with the hardware ennoblement stack, i.e., for users with amdgpu hardware installed. In my case the updated kernel and X display drivers appeared to be OK, but upon logging out and later logging in to the system, the display would crash (black screen). I would then have to blindly switch tty to ctl-alt-f2 and reboot from the console (also still black screen). After several cycles of this my bios settings got corrupted and after fixing that issue, I restored my OS partitions from yesterday's backup.

@dbergstein

Rebooting without visible screen content:

SystemSettings->
Shortcuts->
GlobalShortcuts->
ksmserver->
RebootWithoutConfirmation->

==>Ctrl+Alt+Shift+PgUp<==

###

Regarding the rest of Your message:
I don't/won't contradict.

Thanks for mentioning the facts and possibilities.

I've not had any problems with the HWE stack so far on my Radeon RX460.

I have an RX460 as well. Perhaps my issue is the combination of the RX460 and older hardware.
