bug with console login

Fri Mar 01, 2019 7:12 pm
Hi guys.

I got some problem. And cannot google answer.

when i switch to console by ctrl+alt+F2 (or F3 or any) and try to login - i type my login and press enter, after that i cannot enter password, because system do one more enter.

After that, while i dont push ctrl+C - it begin work in cycle "login incorrect.... login incorrect...login incorrect" without any more input from me

I got this bug on two independent PC (KDE neon), home PC and work PC

Someone know how to fix it? When i will break my KDE, i will have big problem without access to console...

Yeah, a very depressing issue.

For some reason, Ubuntu team decided to push the fix on the next stable -updates release (March 4th, 2019), even though it's a userspace-breaking issue.
Here's a quote of how the fix is being released at the moment (source, posted at February 13th, 2019):
...: the issue is present in kernel 4.4.0-142, 4.15.0-45 and 4.18.0-14. The three versions were already released,
but the fix for the regression observed in this LP is present in the new versions that are getting released in this cycle.

For Ubuntu 16.04/Xenial (and Trusty-HWE), the candidate version is: 4.4.0-143. This version is already available through the -proposed pocket, nubu validated that it fixes the issue (thanks nubu!).

For Ubuntu 18.04/Bionic (and Xenial-HWE), the candidate version for kernel 4.15 wasn't released yet, so we can't validate yet. This was the reason you couldn't test - your Ubuntu is configured to use 4.15 series, the called HWE kernel. Given the proposed version of 4.15 series for this cycle wasn't released yet, you couldn't test. You *can* install 4.4.0-143 from -proposed if you want, but you'll need to manually set grub to boot that instead of 4.15 (as per md_5 comment).

Finally, for Ubuntu 18.10/Cosmic, the fix was released in -updates already, in kernel 4.18.0-15, so the -proposed test isn't even necessary, the fix was released normally by now.

EDIT: When that post was posted, it seems build for bionic was somewhat delayed, but it's already available a few hours or days after in -proposed pocket. If you have it enabled, there should be version 4.15.0-46-generic available, and people have confirmed that it has fixed the issue, but yeah, it will only enter -updates in March 4th, 2019.

EDIT 2: I can also confirm that it has fixed the issue. If you're new to manually updating linux-headers, make sure to update linux-headers-generic package instead, as it will also install updates for all the other relevant packages (you know, instead of just installing linux-headers-4.15.0-46-generic package by itself, for example).
