(Warning: This is my first post here, I did try to search myself the answer, I'm also a Linux newbie and I may have put this into the wrong thread... I apologise up front, thx)

Hello all.

As the title says, I've just installed a fresh install of the latest KDE Nero and have updated all required updates, however I can't seem to get Firefox to understand its the default browser. I have set it in default applications, but Firefox still can see it. I have attached some screenshots at the bottom to explain myself better. It's definitely not a big deal at all, but it would be nice to learn more on how to get the system running correct, since Id like to move from Windows to here full time.

Cheers.

Start this:

$ kcmshell5 about-distro

Click on "kde.neon.org" at the top.
Does any web-browser open?

Thank you. That opens in Firefox, do it's definitely the default browser. I'll just tell Firefox to stop checking on opening and that will stop the message from popping up. Cheers.

I have the same issue and had to disable the default browser check in Firefox. Also Firefox opens when clicking on the URL in the aforementioned about dialog.

I have this as well. I think it is related to the GTK_USE_PORTAL=1 thing that was added a couple of months ago - I still can't get the QT save dialog to work and I have had this default browser thing since that update.

Do you get the KDE save window when you Save As something, or the usual GTK?

Possible workaround

We can force Firefox to start without setting GTK_USE_PORTAL. To do so, one must edit the following file:

Code: Select all
/usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop

And on the first Exec line within the file, you have to add env --unset=GTK_USE_PORTAL, in order to execute Firefox without this variable being set. So the line on the file must be like:

Code: Select all
Exec=env --unset=GTK_USE_PORTAL /usr/lib/firefox/firefox %u

IMPORTANT:

After that you must logoff or reboot and then, try setting Firefox as the default browser again.

Keep an eye on possible updates regarding this issue. Maybe this tweak can help for now but on further improvements it's possible to become buggy.

The problem and solution were described by Igor Ljubuncic aka Dedoimedo: https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/fir ... owser.html ;-)

when I use $ kcmshell5 about-distro yes firefox is openin
but Default Applications don't allow me to specify firefox and some application still opening with brave instead of firefox.
Also in Default Applications I can't define Thunderbird instead of KMail
and for some kind of file VSCodium open as File Browser instead Dolphin even if Dolphin is the File Manager by default
