Hello,
I have made a virtual machine of KDE Neon on a Linux machine having a different kernel version. I need to be able to share the clipboard between host and guest. How could I setup the guest in this regard? If I install the guest additions provided by the host, KDE breaks in guest. Thank you. |

I'm not sure what you mean by "KDE breaks in guest".
Sharing the clipboard is controlled by the Devices -> Shared Clipboard VirtualBox VM menu option. Settings are Disabled (default), Host To Guest, Guest To Host, and Bidirectional. However, for this to work, you need to install the Guest Additions. But installing these may be problematic on newer Linux guests. I have various guests (Linux and Windows), but none with KDE Neon on VirtualBox (KDE Neon is my host and using the latest VirtualBox 6.0.4). I never had any issues installing the guest additions with VirtualBox. I do have a KDE Neon guest on a work computer (Windows 7 host), but running VmWare Player. I was previously using Linux Mint 17.3 and that worked fine and I had no difficulty getting it to work. But that goes end-of-life shortly, and I decided on KDE Neon as its replacement for all my computers. However, with KDE Neon, I could not get VmWare's guest additions installed. The Player version is old, the KDE Neon is too new. I was able to work around the problem by installing the open-vm-tools and open-vm-tools-desktop packages on the KDE Neon guest. These won't work for VirtualBox, but I see that there are various virtualbox-guest-* packages in the repositories, but only for VirtualBox 5.2.18.
Currently running KDE Neon 5.22.5 and 5.19.4 (with Windows 10 in a VM); migrated from Linux Mint 17.3

Then, what is the procedure for KDE Neon to install the guest additions?
I have Version 6.0.4 r128413 (Qt5.6.1) on host, kernel 4.20. KDE Neon has kernel 4.18. What is the package to install on KDE Neon. I guess the kernel version difference crashed it. If I mount from host the guest additions CD, KDE won't start anymore, an X message is thrown telling me KDE could not start. What should be used on KDE Neon? The host has packages for the case it is a guest, I suppose should be the same on KDE Neon. |

I did. This part crashed KDE.
I'm new to KDE Neon, I know it's an Ubuntu derivative, but it's unclear to me how to use this inheritance. Or what to install from above. |

Interestingly, sudo apt install virtualbox-guest-x11 solved it.
However, this is not available through KDE Neon's package manager, Discover. I did not install the guest additions anymore. I don't think I need them. |

What does "crashed KDE" mean?
Please, explain the details. "KDE" is a group of people. "KDE neon" is a kernel + utilities, an operating system. "KDE Plasma" is the Desktop Environment. What "crashed"? How? |

There's been a lot of bugs that start to pop up in regards to modules with kernels >4.19. I wouldn't be surprised if VirtualBox itself is having issues. Had you installed dkms for VirtualBox? It seems like you were able to fix it by installing a 5.2 version of GA when you're running 6.04, which IMO points to VirtualBox being the culprit. Unless you installed virtualbox-guest-x11 6.04 from Disco, which has dependencies that would break nearly everything due to Neon being an LTS distro (I would know, I've tried it).
You might want to take a look at installing their extension pack from their page: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads I regularly VM Neon in Neon to do testing so I don't break my host system as often. Try turning on these settings: EFI | >2048MB RAM | VBoxVGA, 128MB VRAM | 3D Accel | KVM acceleration (or default) |

Hi, sorry, I was not notified about the latter replies. I use KDE Neon for KDE testing, now I have a lot of trouble with VirtualBox crashing due to a clipboard management conflict when using KRDC, that being my main centre of operations because I work remotely all day. It's a real stopper.
I have no clue if can be fixed with a specific guest additions package supplied by KDE NEon/Ubuntu repos or Oracle. |
