Loving Neon

Wed Jun 26, 2019 5:12 am
I had tried KDE a few times in the past, most recently early in Plasma 5 maybe a year or so ago. I'd never loved it, because it seemed highly unstable most of the time, and the desktop defaults/conventions didn't do it for me.
However, I decided to give Neon a whirl again, just after the release of 5.16. Wow, it's stable (well except under Wayland..and I think most of that is due to some transparent theming that seems to throw kwin to 100% cpu) and I really do love it. I'm a technophile, and I'm finding that I spend the majority of my time in Neon, while I keep an eye on at least four other distros (installed). In having up to eight distros installed and with a high degree of change (installing a different distro at least every week), I've found some to **** all over other grub/EFI configurations. After an installation that broke all other distros, I was desperate to get my Neon back (and it wasn't hard to repair the damage and edit grubs that got trashed). What a relief, and I couldn't believe I felt that way about KDE.
In short, really good work folks! It's snappy, it is amazingly low memory use for all it has, it's super configurable, and I don't believe it's abended except when running under Wayland. I guess we all gotta go Wayland sometime, but I'm not sure this year is the year. :) Good luck.
