Since last update of Plasma 5.16.1, I have to move to xrender as composer to keep transparency of menu.
Any idea of the problem ?

Please provide more details about the video card and drivers and such that you are using to help with identifying where the problem may be.

Which theme? How old is it?
Depending on the theme, you might try disabling Blur in the Desktop Effects section of System Settings. I believe Xrender does not support this effect, so you don't get the blurring that may removing the transparency.

Not sure it is specific to Plasma 5.16, I have similar issue with transparent panels in 5.15 as well, until I turn off the Blur effect.

It concerns the Ktrans theme. Only the panel is darken. To get transparency again I had to move to xrender. it is a minor issue which i observed with Intel HD graphic 520

Did you try and disable Blur in the Desktop Effects section?
I have used this one myself, and Blur has to be disabled for transparency to work, both on intel and AMD for me. Xrender does not support blur, so that is why it is fully transparent when using that.

Your are right, if I disable the blur effect, transparency is back.
