Newbie, New Install, No Sound

Fri Oct 11, 2019 3:29 am
Hi, came from windows, installed KDE Neon. It looks very nice ran well from the stick, but no sound, but I installed anyway.

Discovery Update, crashed continuously but was overcome using the command line, and everything has updated.
Sound though does not work at all, aside from the occasional pop or two.
I've fiddled around and have gotten nowhere.
I guess it goes without saying I know nothing about linux.
Any assistance would be appreciated
Thanks
Nic

PS, this is not a KDE Neon problem alone. I first encountered in in Manjaro, then MX Linux, and this is the 3rd Distro I'm trying.
I am installing on a All in One HP desktop

And while I'm at it, my wireless keyboard does not work, where as my wireless mouse does. I have switched in a connected keyboard now.
The wireless keyboard did work in Manjaro, but not in MX linux.

Sound is my main concern though
So again, I do appreciate your assistance

Have you solved your sound problem?
I tried four distros and for me Kubuntu Plasma was the nicest.

Learn how to use AlsaMixer by going to the Internet for instructions.
Try here, it helped me: https://www.maketecheasier.com/alsa-uti ... mand-line/

Thanks, No I have not resolved the sound problem.
I will check out you link.
Thanks again
Nic

I did use your link, and while it was very informative on the use of alsamixer and amixer, it did not help my sound problem.
Any other suggestions I'll gladly try
Thanks again

The HP desktop motherboard is most likely propriatary. Check the BIOS for any sound settings.
It's very easy to deal with installations of these distros if you have an extra disk drive.
Are you installing Linux on the Windows' "c" drive? What O/S version is your desktop using?
You may just as well try Kubuntu Plasma since there is no sound.
https://kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/
I am using Kubuntu 19.04

I don't know what is meant by delete.

Yes it is installed on the C drive as the lone operating system.
No I don't have a second drive.
And yes, limited as my knowledge is, I think it is a HP proprietary issue. So, don't really know where to go from here.
I have looked in the bios, but will do so again.
Sound isn't necessary, but it would be nice.

If any brain stormed ideas come up, let me know.

Thanks for assistance.

I installed Kubuntu. Same issues
I will say this, Of the five distro's I've tried, Neon and Kubuntu have provided the most pops.
So they know the sound hardware is there, they just don't know how to use it.
Again any direction will help.
The operating system Im using now is linux, Kubuntu.

Thanks Nic

DId you go into the terminal and mess around with alsamixer?
Using the arrows go all the way to the right, the display will go past where you think it ends.
There try up and down arrows. Mine shows stereo, surround and headphones.

can you go to the konsole/terminal and post the output of

Code: Select all
lspci -k

and

Code: Select all
pactl list sources

this will show whether your hardware is even recognized by the system , and please use the "code" button at the top of the text input field hear and place your output between the "code" tags.

Thanks for the direction. Below you will see the information requested.
To my unknowing eye, it looks as if it can see a sound device.
As i said earlier. it does seem to be trying, but the result is only the occasional pop sound.
Thanks for you help.

Yes, I have played around with amixer, alsamixer and some other on pulseaudio I think, can't quite remember. anyway all three of them looked good to go. Bars cranked up, and no mutes on.

I have Kubuntu 19.04. Have you looked in audio sounds too see what profile you are using. You can view it in system settings-multimedia--audio volume- advanced tab. I had this problem once upon a time. See if it set to Analog Stereo Duplex. Offering help

I don't know much about ALSA or PulseAudio, but maybe you could try deleting the configs:
Code: Select all
killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.config/pulse/* ; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Then reboot, hopefully your sound works. If not, you could try reinstalling ALSA or PulseAudio via APT, or just reinstalling the newest KDE Neon User Edition.

It could also be some weird problem with Kernel 5.0 (I was having problems with suspending, because my laptop is weird and bad). You could try installing Kernel 4.18:
Code: Select all
sudo apt install linux-image-4.18.0-25-generic
sudo update-grub

Then reboot and select 4.18.0-25-generic from the GRUB boot menu.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

that did not seem to help either. thanks though.
I am back in kde neon now, for no particular reason, I just seem to like it more.

I am also curious why does it show that I have 6 sound devices and not just one?

Code: Select all
doctor@The-Tardis:~$ aplay --list-devices

Probably because you have 5 HDMI ports? I have an HDMI port on my laptop, and it shows up as a second sound device:
Code: Select all
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 0: ALC255 Analog [ALC255 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Maybe one of those HDMI ports is actually the correct sound device, seeing as you have a desktop computer (I think)?

If you still can't get sound working, you could always get a USB sound card or something :P

That's an idea, i didn't realize there was such a thing.
Sometimes the work around is better than the solution.
Would you know what would be a good choice.

Then I'll start working on the question why doesn't neon see my wireless keyboard, it sees my wireless mouse.
Thanks again
