I've been using Neon for quite a long time now, and I enjoy it a lot. I never really had any problem with Discover, but, I have a thing against app-store like programs. I'd like to replace it with Muon, which I vastly prefer. From some tests I've done, Muon can replace it just fine, and from what I can tell it can update the system properly too. On a test VM I'm using I did not have any issue after purging Discover and using only Muon, except for one thing, I don't seem to get any notification for updates. I installed the package required to use the Configure Software Sources (software-properties-kde), and in there I can see settings for notifications, but no matter what no notifications are ever received. I explored the various packages related to muon and found some packages that have promising names such as muon-notifier but those are related to Discover so maybe I'm missing something here.

Anyway, is it even possible to replace Discover with Muon (or a similar packet manager)? Any way to get a notification when new package updates are available like in Discover?

Almost never use Discover but left it there - it's doing no harm. I just "sudo apt update" in a konsole immediately after log-in every day, often without even thinking!

I know it's doing no harm, but it would be cool if I could just use Muon instead

My p/c is set up on a similar way using muon to add packages and updates (rather than discover). I still have discover installed but just to give me prompts for system updates.

If you are keen to remove discover why not just do it and twice a week or so, just manually get muon to check for any updates
