Downloaded neon-user-20191205-1116.iso and wrote it to usb stick.
Inserted the stick to a PC (bios based PC with intel chipset & dual core processor + 2GB RAM) and tried to boot it. The result is a black screen with blinking white cursor at top left. The live media seems to boot OK except GUI as I can switch to a virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and log in there. I'm guessing that the culprit is the graphics chipset & modesetting driver combo? Are there any possibilities to get to the graphical user interface? Some grub kernel switches etc? I was able to get into the live media grub menu and switch language there, but the inserted kernel parameters (I tried xdriver=vesa) seemed to be ignored... |

OK, some developments on the topic.
It's Intel ICH7 Family chipset with Intel 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller. So, switched to the virtual concole (Ctrl+Alt+F2) logged in and installed:
This removed the xserver-xorg-video-intel-native-modesetting (Dummy package to force native modesetting for xorg on intel) package. Then init 3 & init 5 and voilà - graphical desktop was up & running. It was possible to start the installer. The screen was not refreshed correctly, only the content of active window, so maximizing the installer window made the installation process more pleasant. The installation process finished OK KDE Neon was installed to hdd. |

If you want developer attention you should report this as a bug through https://bugs.kde.org against Neon
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

We do not support old intel chipsets. Non-modesetting Intel drivers have all sorts of graphical artifact going on so kwin developers asked that we force modesetting by default.
Annoyed with bbcode since 1999.

Yes, I'm aware, the modesetting is a preferred driver. Some distros (eg Mageia) still default to intel though...
So the installed KDE Neon still booted to black screen. Had to repeat the procedure with installing xserver-xorg-video-intel package. Rebooted the system and the Plasma desktop came up. However - there were error messages, that kwin has crashed and restarted due to composition with opengl rendering. So switched the composition rendering backend to XRender and now the system works at least satisfactory ![]() The only remaining problem seems to be displaying some graphics in menus. For example: right click on desktop -> Configure Desktop - now it takes up to minute to display all the desktop background previews... Or the same in Systemsettings -> Global Theme - it takes again very long for the themes previews to appear... Any ideas how to mitigate this behaviour? In comparison - Firefox plays videos very smooth even at full screen of my fullhd monitor... |
