I actually can, but have to keep clicking on the file a hundred times and click ridiculously fast. I'm guessing the people that had this bug a few months ago would have been able to open files if they had clicked much faster and more. I've only learned of this a few days ago.
So how can I fix this? Other files elsewhere open normally, don't have to click really fast to open them. I have the latest KDE Neon and plasma. |

Does it have to be a double click ?
Files on my desktop open perfectly if you use the single click method.
Acer Aspire TC-120 Desktop. 8GB RAM.

Single click works fine, but I don't want a single click to open stuff.

For testing purposes I enabled double click on my pc and I was able to open files and folders in the desktop area without any problems. So, it would seem that you are one of the few people that are experiencing this issue.
You could try using the "Defaults" or "Reset" buttons in the "Workspace Behaviour" screen to see if that helps at all.

That's not really a solution.
Is there no solution? |

Have you tried changing mouse configurations?
I am not in front of my computer (and I haven't desktop configuration) but I think there's a configuration for clicking velocity or something so. |

Yes, joninchaurbe. The current clicking velocity is fine for files everywhere except on the desktop. And when I change it, the change is effective, and files open with faster or slower clicks. But they do not effect stuff that's on the desktop.

Why?
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

I meet the same problem with a 144 Hz monitor, and I can double click the desktop icons under 60 Hz. Do you use a high refreshrate monitor?

I have the same problem with a 240Hz monitor.
If however I try really hard to double-click really REALLY fast, I can launch an icon on the desktop on the rare occasion. Looks like some kind of a bug where the double click speed for the desktop is being affected by the refresh rate of the monitor, perhaps it's determining double click interval by number of elapsed frames? |

Same here - 144Hz panel, double click on desktop simply doesn't work unless I change refresh rate to 50Hz.
Operating System: Kubuntu 20.04 KDE Plasma Version: 5.18.5 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.68.0 Qt Version: 5.12.8 Kernel Version: 5.11.0-37-generic OS Type: 64-bit Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor Memory: 15,6 GiB of RAM |

Same for me with an 144 hz Monitor
It's clearly a bug when using high refresh rate monitors. If i click really fast it does work. I have reported the bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=456504 But i am unsure if the product "Active Window Control" is correct. |
