Hello all, I have been trying to install Neon for the past few days with no luck. Every time that the installer gets to calculating files to skip copying, it throws this error:

Code: Select all
the installer has encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:

[errno 5] input/output error

this is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk/ It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old or in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.

I have tried a few different ISO's (the latest three that have been released for User edition), I have tried switching NVMe drives ( I have two), and I have even tried to install with just one stick of memory (8 GB) installed.
My current setup, and the hardware in which I am wanting to install Neon onto is:

Code: Select all

i7 7700HQ
GTX 1060 6GB
2 NVMe SSD's (one ADATA XPG SX7000NP, and another is some samsung one)
16GB of DDR4 memory

I can confirm that vanilla Ubuntu, Manjaro, and PopOs will install, but Kubuntu 19.10 and KDE Neon will not.
If I need to provide more info, please let me know!

Hmm, tried it a few more times using a freshly downloaded ISO each time. I also tried using two different thumb drives, although I know it has nothing to do with either of my thumb drives, since they both work with every other (other than Kubuntu and Neon) distro that i have tried.
I don't has anyone ever even come across this issue before? Or heard of it at all? It happened a while ago when I had just come around to using Linux, and I think it was with Ubuntu 18.04, and I was installing it onto an older (like Core 2) rig that I had put 8 GB of memory in, but found out that if I removed one of the sticks of memory (hence why I mentioned trying to do that earlier), it would install and then I could put the stick back in, and it would boot perfectly.

ANY kind of suggestions, like maybe tell me where I should start looking or if I came to the wrong place for this, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

erm, are you sure you want to install the iso to the hard disk? That's not what you are supposed to do, the Rosa Image Writer writes to an USB stick to create a bootable installation medium, which you then boot from to install.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to give the impression that I'm trying to write the ISO to the storage device itself. I am booting from live media (which was created using one of my other rigs running Ubuntu, and using the built in Disks program to write to a USB 3.0 flash drive), and running it. Then of course, selecting "try KDE Neon", and then running the installer.
If I my ask, what made you think that I was trying to write the ISO directly to my drive? I had written that the error was even coming from the installer ("the installer has encountered and error...").
Let me know, so I can change it! Thanks!

Sorry, I was probably on coffee withdrawal when I read the first error message, my bad.

What puzzles me is the error message at the start, pointing to a faulty hard drive. Did you inspect those after this message?

Oh no! Don't say your bad, it was really my bad. I should have been more clear on the specifics. I was just scared, because having someone as admirable as yourself (OG in the OSS community) had called me out on something haha!

Anyway, yeah. It is very odd to me too. I think I am going to try a few more things today, like eve a couple of weird ones.
To answer the question, on if I had inspected the storage drives after this error had happened: yeah, I have. I have tried to install Neon in the past on these same drives, and the same thing happened. I think when I get done troubleshooting I'll be able to give some more details.
Is there anything that I can run specifically inside of the installer, like a bug reporter, and then export the info to a usb drive or anything? Maybe fixing this or finding the root cause could be my first contribution (been trying to learn, so that i can contribute).

Cheers!

Alright so, this is weird. I ended up trying everything I could think of, ll at once. Which I now wish I wouldnt have, because I don't know which on was the culprit. I removed one of the NVMe drives, and one stick of memory, then wiped the disk I left in with parted live. I then booted into the Neon installation media, and proceeded to install... and it went without a single hitch.
Now I am proudly running Plasma again, on my main rig. What should I do from here? I don't think this was actually solved, and I have seen random forums where people are having the same issue. Should I continue to investigate this?

You may have to look at disabling any RST/raid settings on the bios

Some nvme drive controllers need special grub commands to get them to play nice with Linux, though if yours are identical, this is not an issue.

As an example:
