Black screen and cursor

Thu Jan 23, 2020 3:55 pm
I updated my KDE Neon Testing yesterday and now all I get after logging in is a black screen with a cursor. What's the fix? Can I go back to the stable edition of Neon by changing the repositories?

Hello,

The test version is said to be unsuitable for the end user ( There is no QA. Will contain bugs), by KDE neon developers.

Use a stable version, comfortable :)

I'll give it a couple of more days to see if an update will correct the problem before I reinstall with the stable version, unless someone here can come up with a solution in the meantime. I even tried creating another user to see if the problem was in my settings; it wasn't.

Maybe the same problem, reported here in other topics, related to recent kernel 5.3 update. What happens if you boot from grub menu a previous kernel 5.0.0.37?

I decided to install the user edition instead of testing. Everything works now.

Do a
Code: Select all
$ Ctrl-Alt-F2
to get into a tty and log in. Then do a
Code: Select all
$ sudo pkcon refresh && sudo pkcon update
Perhaps an update will clear the problem.

After this breakage, which renders it unusable, I went to the user version (from testing), and it works fine. But, what does the user version offer over Kubuntu or KDE on Arch or some other distro? Arch has an extensive wiki and user support. This distro doesn't. Even Sabayon has devs that participate in the forums and provide support.

Well, nobody has a magic crystal ball that tells what is wrong with your system :)
If the display does not come up, the problem is most probably with Xorg.
Switch to the virtual console with Ctl+Alt+F2, log in and check the Xorg.0.log file.
It is located in /var/log directory.
There are lines with:
(II) - information
(WW) - warning
(EE) - error
Look for the lines with (EE) and what they are telling. Most probably you will find the reason for black screen there. At least it gives some info what to do further...
And no, I'm not a developer. Just user like you. OK, maybe the learning curve is longer... :D

Read this thread. This may or may not be a fix for the problem https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthrea ... n-t-fix-it
