Greetings all! I've been using KDE Neon for a little over six months now, and am trying to make it my daily driver environment.
I've noticed a strange (to me anyway) behavior in Dolphin. When browsing a local directory, Dolphin displays size of the directory and the free space available on the device. But, when browsing network shares, Dolphin shows 0 B free. This is true of any network share, either on my NAS, or other shared computers. My laptop running Linux Mint KDE shows accurate device status as do all other environments including virtual machines hosted on this KDE Neon machine. Can anyone tell me what's missing in KDE Neon that causes it to report 0 B free in the Status Bar space information area only when browsing network shares?

I suspect this has to do with the protocol (e.g. what kio driver it uses).
Testing on some stuff I have on our company network, when browsing locally-mounted drives the free space shows up properly; but when browsing using the smb protocol (e.g. smb://myuser@the-file-server/path/to/file), the free space is reported as 0 B. I don't know if that's intentional or if there's just something that they need to implement in some of these network protocols to retrieve the free space, but it doesn't hurt to open a ticket to bugs.kde.org to see about getting it added.

Thanks airdrik, it's good to know it's not just me. Booted up my Debian KDE laptop a while ago, and found the same behavior on Dolphin there. Installed pcmanfm-qt on the Debian machine, and pcmanfm displays accurate status info. Tried installing pcmanfm-qt on Neon, but failed due to unmet dependencies. So, still looking for a solution...

Since this relies heavily on Gnome libraries it is very unlikely you will be able to install this on Neon...
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

Hi Mamarok, what exactly are you referring to that relies on Gnome libraries?

free space info were bugged out and should be accurately reported in the upcoming release of dolphin (19.12.3 if I am not mistaken)
Annoyed with bbcode since 1999.

The packages you mentionned, pcmanfm-qt

Oh, I see. It was my thinking (probably in error) that Qt, KDE and KDE apps were written in the same language, where as Gnome libraries were from a "competing", Gnome Tool Kit.
Anyway...still seeking the source of the failure of Dolphin to display network file system size and available space. |

Cool! Or should I say...Kool! Looking forward to it, I see I'm currently on 19.12.2 so .3 shouldn't be too far away. If it works out to be true, then I should be able to stick with KDE Neon long term. |

No, you are very correct - pcmanfm-qt is a pure Qt application and does not depend itself on gnome libraries (but it does not install in current KDE Neon anyway due to missing (outdated?) libfm-qt3 package). I can only guess, that she meant, that virtual filesystems (including network ones) for pcmanfm-qt are provided by gvfs plugins which could depend on gnome libraries? |

Dolphin Version 19.12.3 is out! Updated my system today, and Dolphin still fails to report the free space on my network connected directories. ![]() |

Today, I have my openSUSE laptop at home and noticed that when browsing my Debian NAS share in Samba on openSUSE KDE, Dolphin Version 19.12.3 is displaying the free space available on the network share just like I feel it is supposed to. But same version of Dolphin on KDE Neon still does not. It's beginning to look like the issue is not with Dolphin, rather it seems the Neon implementation of Dolphin.

Well...don't know just when it happened, but noticed today that Dolphin is correctly reporting the free space on network attached directories. Yay!
![]() It sure took a while to get this issue sorted, but I'm happy it's finally been fixed. Was just about to migrate to a different distro for my main PC. Glad I don't have to do that now. |
