Hello all,
I recently switched to KDE Neon from K/Lubuntu. I have a Brother MSC-7360N scanner/printer. In the past, I had no issues installing the driver and using both the scan and print functions. After installing and updating Neon, I went to the Brother website and downloaded and installed the drivers, following these instructions: https://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn3.html?c=us_ot&lang=en&comple=on&redirect=on The printer works just fine, but my computer cannot "see" the scanner at all. How do I figure out what is not working and how to fix it? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. |

I'm on:
Operating System: KDE neon 5.18 KDE Plasma Version: 5.18.5 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.69.0 Qt Version: 5.14.2 Kernel Version: 5.3.0-51-generic OS Type: 64-bit Processors: 2 × AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics Memory: 3.3 GiB of RAM I have the same issue; mine is also a Brother printer, MFC - 790CW. I installed all the relevant files: https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloa ... all&os=128 For me, there seems to be a connection established between the printer and PC. The documentation on the Brother site says to run this command: sudo brscan-skey -l I get this message: MFC-790CW : brother3:bus2;dev1 : USB Active When I press print to file from the scanner, I can see a pnm file created under this folder on my computer: /home/user/brscan/ However, the scanner doesn't start scanning, and the file ends up being 0 bytes in size. The scanner gets stuck "connecting", then times out. If I print to image from the scanner, Gimp (which is necessary for this task, according to the brother site) comes back with this message: (gimp:2254): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: 10:06:45.130: g_object_set_is_valid_property: object class 'GeglConfig' has no property named 'cache-size' (gimp:2254): Gtk-WARNING **: 10:06:45.192: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "adwaita", I have tried other scanning software - e.g. Simple Scanner and XSane, but neither detect the scanner, even though KDE shows it as active through the command line. Incidentally, I can scan to an SD card, so there is workaround; however, it would be great to be able to use a USB cable instead.

Both of you, did these scanners ever work under Linux? I doubt this, as all Linux distributions rely on the sane library for scanning, and both printers are listed on openprinting.org as "Paperweight", in other words, barely supported. So unless the manufacturer provides a Linux driver, there is very little hope this will ever work.
FWIW: it is always a good idea to check openprinting.org and its database before a printer/scanner purchase to avoid such surprises...
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

Hi Mamarok, Brother does provide scanner drivers for my printer for Linux. KDE detects the scanner through the software, but it seems that the scanner won't connect to KDE. Also, other software won't detect the scanner even when the software provided by Brother detects it. Brother does have a disclaimer that the software may not work under particular variants of Linux, so I'll put the issue down to that. Thanks for your help.
