Is there any way to configure the system to allow me to switch between US English keyboard/input, and Japanese keyboard/input, where you can for example start typing "kata" and then are given a choice between hiragana, katakana, or several different kanji?

I used to be able to do this on Kubuntu with ibus, but from what I can gather searching the web ibus isn't supported any more. I understand that I need to use programs called "fcitx" and "mozc" but I have no idea how to set them up.

It took me a while to figure out how to setup my Chinese input method with fcitx. I remember being quite frustrated.

Here is how I got mozc to work.

First, install fcitx and mozc:

sudo apt install fcitx fcitx-mozc

Then, change the input method to fcitx by first running…

im-config

…and then choosing fcitx in the next few screens. Then, log out and log back in.

By now, you should see a keyboard icon in your menu tray in the bottom left corner of your screen. Right click on it and choose configure. In the "Global config" tab, look for the keyboard shortcut for "Trigger Input Method".

Now, open up something you can type in (like Kate), and try to switch to Japanese input method using the keyboard shortcut. If it works, the keyboard icon should turn to あ.
