Please help. I switch to Neon a couple of months ago and have been very impressed with the smoothness of updates etc.
Until today; the latest update (new kernel required a restart) has rendered my system unusable. The network is unavailable and the the screen resolution cannot be changed or arrangement cannot be changed. =========================== Looked at the Advanced option on the boot screen and booted easily into 5.3.0-62 - so now everything under control. It's re-arranged my icons - but I haven't lost anything. I am impressed - but for some reason was never aware of this facility. (Well, I have to moan about something). |

Many thanks for replying - but it has just led to another question. Thanks for the link to the discussion on Nvidia drivers - but my system already uses nvidia very successfuly - including the nvidia-settings app. After the automatic system upgrades takes place (via Discover) and I'm presented with the low-resolution screen there is no network running - so running the ubuntu-drivers autoinstall wouldn't work. Or have I completely misunderstood the solution here? Many thanks again for your help so far. |

ok, boot the new kernel, and enter the IP commando in a terminal, to see if you have an interface.
Post also bad messeages from journallog to the "-- Reboot --" flag.

Many thanks for your suggestions, but whatever I did I cannot start the network on 5.4.
I feel sure that if I can only get the network working, then the ubuntu-drivers autoinstall will work. I've had the package managers look for missing / broken packages - but they came up empty (on 5.3 of course) Question is - how do I activate the network - seems there is something missing. LATER EDIT: Is it possible that running "ubuntu-drivers autoinstall" on 5.3 will install new network drivers and enable the network card to work? I'm hesitant to run it without advice in case it borks my 5.3. But thanks again - I appreciate your time. The logs you wanted to see are as follows (sorry can't lay it out as simply as you probably expect - I'll try and learn) ip -a Usage: ip [ OPTIONS ] OBJECT { COMMAND | help } ip [ -force ] -batch filename where OBJECT := { link | address | addrlabel | route | rule | neigh | ntable | tunnel | tuntap | maddress | mroute | mrule | monitor | xfrm | netns | l2tp | fou | macsec | tcp_metrics | token | netconf | ila | vrf | sr } OPTIONS := { -V[ersion] | -s[tatistics] | -d[etails] | -r[esolve] | -h[uman-readable] | -iec | -f[amily] { inet | inet6 | ipx | dnet | mpls | bridge | link } | -4 | -6 | -I | -D | -B | -0 | -l[oops] { maximum-addr-flush-attempts } | -br[ief] | -o[neline] | -t[imestamp] | -ts[hort] | -b[atch] [filename] | -rc[vbuf] [size] | -n[etns] name | -a[ll] | -c[olor]} === ==================================================== Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: ACPI E Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: do_IRQ Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: do_IRQ Jul 26 16:53:33 neonjjmGA kernel: do_IRQ -- Reboot -- Jul 26 16:39:47 neonjjmGA systemd[2491]: Jul 26 16:38:24 neonjjmGA systemd[2491]: ============================================= lspci |grep -i ethernet 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Many thanks for your suggestions - but I thought you'd like to know a couple of things:
Unfortunately, I cannot run 5.4 because of missing (network) firmware rtl_nic/rtl8125a-3.fw for module r8169. This has been reported on Debian, Ubuntu etc. but as it probably doesn't affect you I'll stop here. I'll report it on this board to see if there is any help available. But again, thanks for your help - it was most appreciated. |
