on my machine i have installed Kde Neon 5.19 and some times when i start my machine the audio drivers are stuck in digital output and stereo input (i don't have a digital out)
and only when i get lucky i start my machine the drivers work fine and in the settings shows the line out that i need

so i tried with this

pulseaudio --start


it wasn't working so i tried purging and reinstalling pulse audio but did nothing

If you have a newer GPU card and HDMI output, that GPU card also has a sound card. The problem is that from the normal sound setup with many features in earlier versions of Linux, everything is now hidden and inaccessible

yeah i think this problem is an update because i only installed two packet that could possibly mess with audio and that is pulseeffects and qpaeq (they didn't work so i purged em)
i leaved all stock except for the bash(powerline and ufetch that starts when the terminal is started) and the aesthetic of the kde enviroment (themes only)

it did not help for me

the audio from mixxx works when it connects directly to alsa when it connects with pulseaudio the audio don't work
so the problem is pulse audio

I have a problem for a while I have a normal audio output then it changes to spdif, I don't know why.
It's working well at the moment, but that doesn't mean that tomorrow there will be no HDMI output instead of analog speaker output or who knows what.
I think the best option is to wait 2-3 months and then do a clean installation of Neon based on 20.04. It has RR distribution, no problems with 5.8.x or 5.7.x kernels, everything works and they are updated every day

I am also having the same problem. After the 20.04 upgrade, my audio output and input devices aren't recognized. I have also tried several clean installs from 2020821-0932.iso. I have tried Kernel 5.8. What's odd is that upon occasional reboots it kinda worked. It was random though. Sometimes after 3 or 4 reboots audio output and mics were there but most every other time nothing was found. Also, when found they don't remember which one was used last session so it defaults to random device default settings. So I unplugged all my USB devices and disabled my hdmi audio profile and now my internal soundcard is the only device left and both the analog built-in audio and the HDMI sound (disabled) are found nearly every reboot now. I should also mention that my two webcams aren't recognized anymore either. I have a 4 dock bay and I tested in both Ubuntu 20.04, and Pop_OS! 20.04 and in both of those distros it is also not working anymore and in the exact same way it is broken here in Neon so it's probably something in the 20.04 base that is not right. Not sure what to do. I should also mention that all the same devices currently work perfectly in Manjaro and Windows.

i think the problem is pulseaudio in 20.04 because if you fire up mixxx (a Dj program that connects directly to alsa) it can select all the devices that you have and even the deactivated ones from the settings, so the problem is pulseaudio, kmix or something like that, not alsa

in the post before i wrote to install kmix instead of plasma-pa (i modified the post)

Pavucontrol has been around for a long time, it is not a problem in pavucontrol, the problem is in recognizing if there is an analog output to the speakers. How can you set something that doesn't even appear in pavucontrol, that's exactly the situation I had.
This all worked perfectly before upgrading or installing a new version starting with the Ubuntu screen. There are Arch and Manjaro, a long time ago Manjaro was kidding about it, it was enough to delete na.config pulse dir and do a restart.

I'm not sure if my issue is the same but I recently installed KDE Neon 5.19 just several days ago and this is the first distribution that does not enable my speakers by default nor does it remember what they are after I've set them. I've got Bose speakers that connect through the simplest 3.5mm jack and on every boot up, I have to go in and change the output (this has never happened before).

Is that what we're talking about?
