I have followed recommendations, done updates, have not broken free from "Please install all available updates..." and most recently ran
jim@tabby6:~$ sudo apt list -a --upgradeable
Listing... Done
kde-config-gtk-style/bionic 4:5.19.4-0xneon+18.04+bionic+build58 amd64 [upgradable from: 4:5.18.5-0xneon+18.04+bionic+build52]
kde-config-gtk-style/bionic 4:5.19.3-0xneon+18.04+bionic+build57 amd64
kde-config-gtk-style/bionic 4:5.19.2-0xneon+18.04+bionic+build56 amd64
kde-config-gtk-style/bionic 4:5.19.1-0xneon+18.04+bionic+build55 amd64
kde-config-gtk-style/now 4:5.18.5-0xneon+18.04+bionic+build52 amd64 [installed,upgradable to: 4:5.19.4-0xneon+18.04+bionic+build58]
kde-config-gtk-style/bionic-updates 4:5.12.8-0ubuntu0.1 amd64

What should I do now?
My guess it is something like remove each of those,
My assumption is that it is safe to do so.
I think the commands will be like
apt remove --purge PACKAGE
where for PACKAGE I would put kde-config-gtk-style/bionic 4:5.19.4-0xneon+18.04+bionic+build58 amd64
and so on.
Is that correct?
Any other thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi!

What exactly is your problem with updating kde-config-style-gtk? I'll suggest running updates using
Code: Select all
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade && sudo apt autoremove
which updates the sources, upgrades to new packages and removes unnecessary stuff which is not longer needed.

Thanks, koffeinfriedhof,

I was skeptical but it seems to have taken care of a lot of problems and, I think, left me with just one:
E: The repository 'https://dl.bintray.com/resin-io/debian stable Release' no longer has a Release file.
N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

That was after I removed Google Earth which was left after the first time I ran the set of commands you suggested:
dpkg --list 'google-earth*' | cat
1140 sudo apt-get purge google-earth-pro-stable
1141 sudo apt-get autoremove
and then ran it again:
1142 sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade && sudo apt autoremove

I googled the dl.bintray.com/resin-io/debian issue and found a suggestion for addressing it that follows:
jim@tabby6:~$ sudo apt-key adv -keyserver hkp: //pgp.mit.edu: 80 -recv-keys 379CE192D401AB61
Executing: /tmp/apt-key-gpghome.ZngUbfz07g/gpg.1.sh -keyserver hkp: //pgp.mit.edu: 80 -recv-keys 379CE192D401AB61
gpg: conflicting commands

Do you have a suggestion for this new impasse?

Seems to be https://github.com/balena-io/etcher. If you need this repo, clean your sources.list and/or sources.list.d-folder and set it up as suggested on the page linked.
Using external sources may break your system, depending on the packages included, and the repo owner has root permissions on your system. So use external stuff with care.

If I recall correctly I got etcher for making USB thumb drives bootable for use with laptops without CD/DVD slots, but I have since gone back to using a portable DVD drive.

What if I do this:
sudo apt-get remove balena-etcher-electron
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/balena-etcher.list
sudo apt-get update

Looks good.

You can list the available sources via
Code: Select all
grep -Ev "^#|^$" /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list
(excluding empty lines and those starting with a comment)

Now the above commands (update, full and autoremove) should run without issues.
