??? My partner's Dell laptop running KDE Neon 5.20.3 when connected to a Canon Pixma MX532 printer+scanner no longer finds a driver for the printer when connected by a USB cable to the printer which is running.
This may have begun with the update to Neon 5.20.3 based on Ubuntu 20.04.

I searched the web for options.
I will have to go to my partner's home to try anything. That is why I am asking here before I go.

Canon rarely makes linux drivers available.

What do you think of getting and installing a driver offered by one these two individuals?
https://canon-print.com/canon-pixma-mx5 ... mac-linux/
http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... -04-18-10/ <-- for prior to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Are there other workarounds?

Or is the only real option to buy a new printer for linux due to the failure of this company to attend to the linux user base?

It won't work over wifi?

Anyway, a common bug with wifi printers connected via USB in Ubuntu 20.04.
Try removing the package ippusbxd and see if that allows it to be set up properly.

If not, then try the drivers from canon, there are pages and pages of how-tos on this series out there.

the ippusbxd allows printers that support networking (ipp) to be used as a if it were wireless printer if connected via USB, which is a driverless setup, same as if it were connected to the network via cable or wifi. Sometimes this does not seem to work for everyone.

Thanks, claydoh.

Yesterday, I removed the package, ippusbxd, but with no success on printer access.

I then did a search and found on the Hong Kong, I think, Canon site, a 2014 driver and downloaded it and extracted it.
It consisted of a couple directories and inside was the 64 bit one I needed along with an install shell script. The driver I want is cnijfilter-mx530series_4.10.1_amd64.deb

I tried running the script, but hit my linux ignorance level. I need to tell it where to install.
Where do drivers get put in KDE Neon?
I will see if I can figure it out...

I think there may be more recent drivers, and above in my first post is a link to a person with a 2018 driver handled by his PPA.

I hope to be able to work using Teamviewer now that I understand her setup better.

(Covid is rampant and I came down with the sniffles last night. I will get a Covid test lined up tomorrow for next week. Meanwhile I will work from across town.)

Other work prevented me from getting back to this issue, but I have a plan now but am unsure of the commands I got to install a PPA maintained by Thierry Ordissimo from
https://launchpad.net/~thierry-f/+archi ... chael-gruz
which I found out about from
https://ubuntuhandbook.org/?s=canon+mx530+driver

I think KDE does not use apt but prefers pkcon so I may try the first line here and see how it reacts on my partner's Dell laptop.
I expect to get an error message but if anyone has suggestions, I will welcome them. I will give it a try in about 8 hours from now.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:thierry-f/fork-michael-gruz
sudo apt-get update

To answer an earlier question, the Canon MX532 will work over WiFi.

(Fortunately for me, the sniffles Covid-19 scare was a false alarm. After talking with my doctor, we decided not to get a test because of lack of all other symptoms and lack of exposure and desire not to impact limited test capacity. Meanwhile, the pandemic rages on due to long standing lack of epidemiological capacity, esp. in Los Angeles.)

SOLVED.

I succeeded with the driver, but I am not sure what I did that actually worked.
As I was preparing to give up and return home, I noticed a popup saying the driver was waiting for something....

Therefore I will list the other steps I took along with occasional restarts as magic in case it might have been required.
Also, it seems that whatever worked depends on using the Canon Pixma USB cable to the laptop. WiFi no longer seems to be an option.

My plan A was to use the Thierry Ordissimo PPA as described above.
But no MX530 driver appeared in system settings after installing it.

Plan B was to use the Canon driver from Thailand.
https://th.canon/en/support/0100587702

I first tried installing the amd64.deb version using gdebi. No luck apparently.

Then I used the shell script supplied with the driver, but it failed to "register" according to messages.
We got the driver message as we gave up.

She bought the printer when she had a Mac. There was a supported driver until Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

My partner and I declared victory, but we have no great confidence or satisfaction.
We got the main thing, a Canon printer, that despite their lack of Linux support, works now with Linux.

Thanks to all who gave help.
