AMD or intel?

Sat Dec 12, 2020 12:02 am
Hi,

I am considering to build a new computer and since i completely moved to KDE neon (i run windows on virtual machine only for photoshop and indesign) i would like to know what is the best option between AMD and intel? Is it better a dedicated GPU or an integrated one (i am talking about compatibility more than performance)?

The idea of buying an AMD PC is very intriguing for me, specially for quality/price.

Any suggestions?

At the moment i run an old i5 with a nvidia gt710 and even if it works fine sometimes i have random issues.

I don't need a computer game but just for basic stuff (internet, libreoffice,a bit of kdenlive and work related things).

Only need a nice and smooth "KDE" experience! ;D

I not too long ago purhaced a Lenovo IdeaCentre 510A-15ARR.

● AMD Ryzen 5 3400G (3.70GHz 2MB) ● APU (AMD Radeon RX Vega 11 graphics) ● 16GB PC4-21300 DDR4 DIMM 2666MHz ● 1TB (7200rpm) HDD + 256GB SSD ● DVD Super Multi Drive

It came with 8Gb RAM but I upped that to 16Gb and later added an MSI 4Gb GTX-1050ti Graphics card for X-Plane.

No complaints with the AMD CPU!

Thank you very much. That's what i was really hoping :)
I read several different point of views about AMD for linux. Sometimes they seems perfect and sometimes they said to stay away from them as they are not supporting linux like they should be.

I understand that everybody uses a computer in a different way and the experience could be not the same but out there there is a lot of confusion about that. Even on linux community.

I just bought an AMD-laptop from Tuxedo and have no complaints whatsoever, both the graphic stack and the CPU work like a charm.

I would be far more concerned for Linux support when it comes to NVIDIA than for AMD, TBH

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Great!
I read that intel drivers are straight into linux kernel so it works perfectly out of the box. Probably an AMD cpu needs some external drivers i guess causing compatibility and security issues. Is it something that I should take in account?

The AMD video drivers worked perfectly but as I sometimes fly X-Plane I needed something a bit beefier and my power supply couldn't handle a graphics card that uses more than 70 Watts so I went with the MSI 4Gb nVidia low profile card. If you don't fly X-Plane then the AMD GPU is fine.
