…al.

If I open a dolphin window from a launcher, and try to open any file that would open in a KDE app, either by double-clicking or right-click > open with, I see the icon for the associated app bouncing for a moment but then it disappears, as if the app has crashed. The app I selected to open the file with never starts.

Examples: text file in Kate, image file in Gwenview or Okular, and so on.

Opening the app first and finding the file from within it, or starting it from a terminal works.

Strangely, it also works if I start Dolphin from a terminal, and then double-click the file, so I can't see terminal output for the error!

It also works fine if the default app (or the one from "open with") is not a KDE app, such as Gimp or Firefox.

This is intermittent; sometimes it works for a while, and then it stops for a while. I haven't figured out any cause.

Does anyone have an idea for what the problem could be, or how I could see what the error is?

UPDATE: It seems the problem exists when Dolphin is started from VeraCrypt. I don't know which of the two causes it (and still can't find an error message) but the workaround is to open Dolphin via launcher, so that VC will instead attach a new tab to the already open window.

I think you are talking about the launch feedback feature, if this is happening by your mouse cursor.

if so, this is 100% normal, is not a crash or error, and can be configured or disabled.
In System Settings, search for 'launch feedback' and you will see some options for it there.

Sorry, I think you misunderstood!

The launch feedback is expected and normal, but I also expect the application to start. It doesn't start, except if dolphin itself was started from a terminal.
