The context of my query is: I am looking for the "best" (for me) distro as a platform for Plasma. It pretty much comes down to a choice between Kubuntu and Neon (it's useful that they are both Debian based as I have used Debian for many years). What follows is based on using Kubuntu 12.04 and Neon 2021-05-13, both running on a desktop machine.
One of the things I really need to have working is hibernation. I started with Kubuntu and hibernation is working fine using "systemctl hibernate". I did that following the instructions here https://askubuntu.com/questions/1240123/how-to-enable-hibernate-option-in-ubuntu-20-04 and all is good, including that a hibernate option shows up on the Leave menu. I am now experimenting with Neon. There seem to be 2 alternative methods: do it as per the above instructions for Kubuntu and suspend via sysmemctl works fine. Alternatively, install the hibernate package (which strangely is not available in the Kubuntu repos) and then pm-hibernate also works fine. It seems to be one or the other, but as they both work, that doesn't really matter. However, hibernate does not appear as a menu option. I found a Neon-specific query about this that said the only change needed to the Ubuntu instructions are to put the enabling instructions in
So, my questions are: 1. Is it better to use either systemctl or pm-hibernate, or does it not make any difference? I have found an answer to this question saying that the former is better on systemd systems which I presume Neon is, but it wasn't really clear that this was the case. 2. How do I add hibernate to the Leave options? 3. Is there a way to get rid of the Sleep option from the Leave menu? Thank you. |
