So I installed Wireshark through the latest KDE Neon Discover application. Turns out it installs a flatpack version, and https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=309&t=164596&p=428454 gives instructions assuming there's /usr/bin/dumpcap, but that doesn't seem to exist (at least not in that location) with it installed as a flatpack.

So...how am I supposed to use Wireshark? I'm new to flatpack, used to just using plain old Debian/FreeBSD.

Did you add your account to the wireshark group? If not, do so, then logout / login and try wireshark to see if the interfaces are available to you.

Yes, did so. Logged out, logged back in. Went so far as to restart the machine, Wireshark still doesn't show any hardware network interfaces. However the `/usr/bin/dumpcap` bin doesn't exist, because it's being delivered as a flatpak (via KDE Discover installer), not a regular install.

Code: Select all
$ groups
drizzt adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin lxd sambashare libvirt wireshark

Figured it out. I'm completely new to Flatpak, didn't know anything about it's permissions/sandbox structure. I installed Flatseal, to manage the permissions, gave the Wireshark Network privs, and now it's there working fine.

*shakes stick at clouds* you youngsters changing everything around! :P
