Freezing issue after fresh install

Mon Aug 09, 2021 6:17 pm
I just installed KDE Neon. But it is freezing up pretty frequently. I am not sure where the problem is.

What system info I should provide? Your help will be really appreciated

PS: I turned of the file search thing in the settings

What do you mean about freezing?
Here I see irregular intermittent freezes of desktop when no mouse movements/input and keyboard input are possible. Then it returns to normal behavior until next time.
It happens only with kernel 5.11, when booted to kernel 5.8 there is no such behaviour.

Thanks for the answer.

The mouse cursor freezes, keyboard stops working. Ctrl + Alt + F2 does not work. I have to shutdown forcefully and start the laptop again. Please let me know if can give any more info to help.

I just loosed my reply when trying to save it. In short, this time, my newly installed Kubuntu is very nice, but the keyboard freezes almost everyday. Today it works, otherwise I have had to restart the computer with varying success. Sometimes I have logged in with the digital keybord, and then nothing works. Sometimes I can work for a little while, but then it slows down so I have to wait seconds or minutes to get next characters. Usually the restart makes things better. When using LibreOffice Writer I can write for some minutes, then the letters suddenly slows down or totally stops working.
Today the machine works perfect, but I don't know if it is fixed or not. I have tried most of the published suggestions on the net, like "ibus-daemon --xim -d" and "ibus-daemon -d -n --desktop=KDE". But it seems to be a common problem, and I don't know what triggers the freezing....
Before Kubuntu I used Ubuntu 20.04 and it happend even then but less frequently, so I think there is some bug in the Ubuntu distro.

I logged on tonight (15th August 2021) after having only recently carrying out a fresh install. Everything has been working to date without issue but when I logged on to finish installing Thunderbird and a few other things I immediately had problems. I found the system was endeavouring to install updates (150 was number shown) so I left it running and finished getting evening mail ready. On my return to the PC the screen was a torn mess with nothing readable. I could not unfreeze the screen as no keys seemed to do anything except for good old R E I S U B. Tat at least got me rebooted. The PC then booted up and I thought I was okay for all of maybe one minute when my Mouse stopped working, the icon just froze on the screen and once again the screen was frozen. I tried another couple of times with exactly the same outcome. I tried to access my logs quickly when I got in but each time it froze before I got anywhere. So booted up with Knoppix DVD and endeavoured to take a look at the logs but couldn't find anything to date. My best guess is that it is something to do with the Updates as the PC works perfectly with Knoppix so not a hardware issue.

Is there any indications of there being this issue of late please? I am running Neon User Version and my system is nothing flash, Intel Processor i7 3.2 , 6GB RAM, Dell Monitor, TV Card, Logitech Keyboard and not a lot else. I have almost nothing installed yet as have not had time to decide on just how I am going to set it up this time as mainly utilise this PC for Photos and Videos and Genealogy software. I have only installed Libreoffice 7.1 and DigiKam. So nothing there that has proven problematic before.

Hello again,
My computer still freezes, or more commonly gets very sluggish and I may have to wait for 1-15 min to get the next letter when typing. To make this reply I have had at least 4 stops and it as taken about 10 minutes to write it. If I want to, as now, write the word "write" it first got "wr", then stop, then "hthhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhn", stop, and then "wrte", finally "write".
Like hillyheights I have installed LibreOffice but earlier version: 6.4.7.2 (Build ID: 1:6.4.7-0ubuntu0.20.04.1). Maybe that is interesting, since I also have a LibreOffice on another totally new windows-pc beside the Kubuntu, which also has a tendency to be slow and sluggish with letters. Is it something in LibreOffice.....?

Kind regards,
perbj

I believe my problems are solved. It is probably some driver missing for my Logitech keyboard. When changing to an old keybord with wire and the built in generic driver, the computer seems to work fine.... Interesting, months of trouble and now a new distro Kubuntu on a wiped dish, and still problems, and it is only a driver....
