Dual boot problem

Thu Oct 07, 2021 5:51 am
Hello everybody.

I hope I get this in the right place in the forum.

I have a kind of "what did I tell you"-problem with my laptop, an Asus Sonicmaster, with a dualboot arrangement of KDE Neon and Win 10. For the first time in a while I started up Win and it updated and then the Neon bootloader was gone.

How get it back, if possible?

Never found a solution myself - Windows 10 just takes over the computer. With old computers/Windows, I would first install Windows. Then install Neon (or Mint that I used previously), which installs GRUB and it would contain an option to boot into Neon (Mint), the default, and Windows would be there as an alternative. But with newer computers, it no longer worked liked this - it just booted into Windows and there was no GRUB.

So now, I just use Windows option to access its boot menu. Hold down the Shift key, then restart (Start / Power / Restart). When the boot menu comes up, select Use a Device. On my computer, there is a selection named "neon".

From power up, you have to use your computer's boot menu, if it has one. On one of my computers, this is F11. I keep hitting F11 until the boot menu comes up. If just hit once, it may not see it and boot into Windows. From my boot menu, the first entry is Window Boot Manager (but this just goes into Windows). The second option is "neon". (Mine also has several entries because I have other drives/partitions in the computer.)

Once "neon" is select, mine then goes to Neon's grub menu. There may be a way to fix this, but I never spent the time to figure it out (i.e. playing with SecureBoot, UEFI options, etc.). The above procedure is sufficient for me.

Currently running KDE Neon 5.22.5 and 5.19.4 (with Windows 10 in a VM); migrated from Linux Mint 17.3

Check the boot order in your Bios - often Windows updates reset the main boot drive/OS back to Windows.

I have Windows 10 and KDE Neon on the same drive in different partitions.

My BIOS does not have an option to select a particular partition, only a drive.
