Since the last update I installed a few weeks back I can't get past the login screen it takes my password, displays the black screen and then goes back to the login screen. I have tried X11 and Wayland (same result) and also 4 different kernals in the advanced start options. I can drop to shell and login to the system that way. Any tips on how to troubleshoot the issue?

I have had the same Problem, I think, the update-prozess failed, but I solved it this way:

First, you need internet-connection, lan-cable is easy, wlan is more sophisticated, see wiki for wlan-setup in terminal.

Switch to terminal:
ctrl-alt-f2

Start another update:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Reboot and get happy

So right, as the updates installed I was totally happy, and then I rebooted and everything worked, wazoom, KDE Neon awesomeness!
