I'm struggling to make Plasma 5.25 work in VirtualBox 6.1.34 running in a Windows 10 Home host. At this moment I have
- Video Memory: 128 MB - Graphics Controller: VMSVGA - 3D Acceleration: disabled The login screen displays just fine, but as soon as I log in: - If I select X11, I just get a black screen. - If I select Wayland, it mostly works, but I'm unable to see the mouse pointer (mouse works, but I have no idea where I'm clicking on), some actions don't accomplish anything (e.g. the log off, reboot and shut-down buttons) and, eventually, texts from applications suddenly disappear. I installed from a User Edition ISO I downloaded in April and it seemingly works fine. Problems start when I let the system install latest upgrades. What settings do you think work best in VirtualBox? What trouble-shooting can I do? |

Alright... Most settings don't seem to make any difference. Graphics controller in particular gets silently reset to VMSVGA whenever you change it. When the VM display gets blank after login, disabling 3D acceleration some times solves it, some times it doesn't. I presume Oracle is not putting much love on its free product (not a surprise).

This is what Ubuntu official documentation has to say:
Contrary to what I said, graphics controller does not silently reset to VMSVGA. I've no idea why that happened earlier. |

I give in. No matter what settings I try, both in VirtualBox and in KDE neon itself, I'll eventually get a black screen when logging in. There must be some kind of incompatibility strictly related to my particular hardware.
