Polar Alignment - unexpected movement

I regularly get problems after Polar alignment, so as I'm fairly new to this I wanted to check if I'm doing something wrong.
The steps go as follows:
1) capture, solve, slew 30 degrees,
2) capture, solve, slew 30 degrees again
3) capture, solve
4) then the manual tweaks for Az and Alt
5) parking the mount at this point (when P.A. is good enough) or slewing to a chosen target sends it to a very different position than expected.

How can this be? The system must know exactly where it is pointing having just solved it. I have to run the parking operation with the clutches disengaged, so that it does not rotate the RA axis way past where it should go, then re-engage clutches, slew to a target and solve again.

Am I missing something?
Thanks for any advice,
John
