This surprisingly took much longer than anticipated with some of the excellent artwork by Tyson Tan(https://tysontan.tumblr.com/post/102534895981/konqi-ver2-design-collection-konqi-the-little) taking a few hours each to convert from full colour to grayscale/lineart. I may have had a better time creating vector versions due to some extensive cleanup with the pen tool I also had to discard some other drawings I had processed as they really stood out too much from the others.
I used Krita to process the artwork and then composed into a hexagon shape to tile with some math and the clone layer array feature(native hexagon tiling would be awesome btw, I almost wanted to reach for Adobe Illustrator). Preview (scaled down 80% from 1080p and then cropped to 720 px width): 1080p: https://i.postimg.cc/1X3FJMMT/konqi-wallpaper.png 4K: https://i.postimg.cc/mkpmwP3Y/konqi-wallpaper-4k.png It's not quite where I wanted to get it, I'm happy to take feedback and make some small edits or work on it more if there is a chance of it winning(I'm doubtful). I have the original KRA files, which has the tiled hexagon instances for creating the tiling pattern, as well as the assets at a larger resolution(I had to scale down to 25% as Krita would crash when using clone layers, even though I had more than 16GB RAM spare and CPU time spare. If the entry wins I can look at converting into vector assets to produce 5K or higher(or you could just reuse the existing tile pattern but that'd affect the scale. Tiled background options (if you used the tile pattern instead of a fixed wallpaper size) would be nice to have a scale slider, for this kind of wallpaper it'd be useful to get the scale right per display |

I noticed ngraham state competition rules were updated recently at the wiki: https://community.kde.org/KDE_Visual_De ... ompetition , but the official forum thread about it, has not: viewtopic.php?f=312&t=160487
This doesn't have the logos, but it has the KDE mascots Konqui and Katie, with prominent Ks, so I suppose my time was wasted as this isn't an entry that qualifies anymore? Also:
How does that play into derivatives? I used someone elses artwork with some tweaks to suit the design I had in mind (tiled bg like in some old 2D games). Am I able to use photos from third-parties with an appropriate license, so long as my submission has had adequate changes such as stylization?
Not sure how I'm meant to go about that, if this counts, I release the wallpaper to KDE under CC By-SA, does that count? Tyson Tan licenses his artwork as:

This wallpaper still qualifies - there's no explicit KDE branding, and you can use derivatives of other works according to their license. So it's fine!

I'm not sure if the "K" and the terminal considered as text or not. |

Terminal even at 4K isn't really readable is it?(assuming DPI is high enough to warrant using it) I'm not sure what the content is meant to mean, it was in other drawings by the artist as well "if", if it's an issue it's easily removable. The Ks - only ones that can be made out as a K are the antlers that just happen to be in the shape of K? |

There are K on neckerchief as well, but I'm not sure if that is considered a text. |

I asked VDG, there seem to be consensus that this wallpaper does qualify. If it's part of the image, and not only text put above it, it should be fine.

No, that's not visibly a K in the image.
Cool thanks Good to hear this entry is valid! |

Cool to see our mascots! As a suggestion for improvement perhaps you could somehow add more color variety.
