Shell replacement

Fri Mar 22, 2013 8:01 am
Hy!

I love KDE since Version 3. The 1st time I saw KDE was on SUSE 6.1. Since then, not much changed for me. On my Linux Systems, I use openSUSE 12.x and it simply works.

However, I still got a Windows PC and the new Metro Style is just a massive load of <censored>. I want to use KDE on Windows. However, is KDE for Windows fully developed? Is a Shell Integration possible, so it automatically starts with Windows. And I dont mean a Autostart Link, I really mean edition the Shell Variable in the Registry, so the Desktop (or Metro) even doesnt startup. Primary I wanna do this for performance and to get rid of Metro at all.

What is not possible with KDE for Windows? To be honest, I am not sure if this project is ment serious or if it ever is developed in a way like KDE for Linux! I can be wrong here - it is only my impression!

Thanks!

Unfortunately there are not many KDE developers who run Windows, and those who do primarily focus on the applications themselves, such as Krita and Amarok.

To the best of my knowledge, while Plasma Desktop can be started on Windows, it is lacking quite a bit of functionality (including the menu system, system tray and task manager in particular).

Thats too bad.

I thought - with the metro disaster - that KDE really had a chance. :-( But if this is true, I guess it wont happen!

Note that contributions to add the necessary applets or infrastructure (task manager, system tray, menu system) to KDE would likely be accepted, as long as the people in question were willing to maintain them.

Unfortuntely we have a shortage of such people.

Actually I am not a Software Developer! However, I am a System Administrator. I am curious, replacing the Shell doesnt mean deleting Programs and Services. Why cant you use the Task Manager and other programs on shortage from Windows until you can develop your own stuff. I dont think this is a violation of the EULA, because it is shipped with windows!

I know there wont be a "corporate design" until it is finished, but looking at the release early, release often concept this would be logical!

PCTools (Shell Replacement) didnt do it a different way in Windows 3.1 and they were quite successful until Windows 95 was released.

The "Task Manager" in this case is the area on the panel where the list of currently running programs is displayed. This needs to run in process as part of Plasma in order to be usable. The System Tray is quite similar in this manner.

Note: Task Manager is not a reference to the Windows application Task Manager - but rather the Plasma applet Task Manager.
