Context-menu for Kompare

Mon Oct 28, 2013 10:46 pm
I recently installed Kompare on my WinXP laptop. Currently, I'm able to use the tool in the following ways:
1) Open the tool, select file A and file B from within the GUI and compare them.
2) Run the tool from cmdline with file A and file B as parameters.

I'd like to know if it is possible to compare two files/folders by invoking Kompare from the Windows Context-menu (i.e select both the files, right-click on one of them, click Kompare and get the tool to show the differences). Right now, this doesn't seem to work.

Are you able to examine how the context menu item causes Kompare to be invoked?
If you can, please check that Kompare is being called in the following manner:
Code: Select all
kompare.exe <first file> <second file>

The 'Open' verb value in the registry is ' "C:\Program Files\KDE\bin\kompare.exe" "%1" '. However, changing this simply to ' "C:\Program Files\KDE\bin\kompare.exe" "%1" "%2" ' doesn't work as a multi-select results in multiple calls to the verb. What I want to know is how to send the selection as arguments (at least when the selection has only 2 items) to this command. I looked at some examples on the net which have implemented this by putting this functionality into a DLL and registering this DLL on the host machine. I was wondering if a simpler approach is possible - all I need is for this to work when 2 files are selected in tandem.

I'm afraid that is more of a question of a Microsoft related forum - only those familiar with Windows Explorer will be able to answer whether what you are after is possible.

Thanks. BTW, I thought I lodged this request in the KDE Microsoft forum. Was I mistaken? Or did you mean something like an MSDN forum?

You have posted in the KDE on Windows forum - however the functionality you are requesting is in a non-KDE application, namely Microsoft's Windows Explorer.

Asking on MSDN or whatever other forum Microsoft provides for questions concerning Windows Explorer is likely to get you the answers you need in this case - as it is generic to all Windows applications, rather than just KDE ones.
