Hey everyone,
KDE looks great! I would love to use it, however I cannot. For some reason, it won't work or at least I don't know how to make it work on my computer. My computer is Windows XP and I want KDE as a replacement shell, because my Windoes Explorer is faulty. The trouble is, I can download all the apps and things for KDE, but nothing appears on my desktop! What do I have to do? Thanks, Steven |

It is theoretically possible to use KDE's plasma as a windows shell replacement. However it is not recommended for daily use; It is by far off from stable and you will have no fun with it. If you look for a stable windows shell replacement, rather use something like emerge desktop: http://emergedesktop.org/ .

Thanks for your reply, I've tried emerge but didn't really like it-that's why I wanted to use KDE!:)
So why is it that there is no desktop with KDE, even though I've seen it used in screenshots? |

Because the Windows port of KDE still needs a lot of work. From http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/KDE_on_Windows/FAQ :

Thanks!
That's what I needed to hear:) In that case, what desktop environment would you recommend that resembles Windoes Explorer but has more features? |

There are a lot of alternate windows shells. Litestep - My personnel favorite, and easily one of the most customizable out there. Many Windows explorer like themes and other themes that look like nothing else. The site lost their theme archive but it is still a good starting point. SharpE - Very bar style oriented shell still easy to use. Many, many others BB4Win, bblean, geoshell, emerge( yeah, I know you rejected it already, but I came up with it's name so I'm partial) and a few others like cairoshell which are in private beta or not free
