Using kbarcode on KDE on Windows

Tue Mar 03, 2009 6:14 am
noob question:

Can anyone help me out with running kbarcode on Windows? I tried downloading the rpm files for kbarcode and opening it in Dolphin (KDE on Windows), but it jus shows the Windows 'Open With' dialog. What am I doing wrong here? :'(

I do not know if KBarcode has been ported to KDE 4 at this stage. It will not be available under Windows until this happens, and is built by the KDE on Windows team.

The RPM file you downloaded is for a RPM based package manager on a Linux system.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Got another question. Am I limited to the applications that come with the KDE on Windows installation or can I download/install/run any other applications made for KDE? If the answer is later, how?

AFAIK the applications must at least been ported to KDE 4. So you cannot run k3b from KDE 3.x for example. Further not each application is guaranteed to be compiling with windows.

well you are mostly limited to what is available from the installer, otherwise you have to download the source and try to compile it yourself, but you have a 50% chance that it won't compile on windows without some patches

If you want to run it on Windows, yes. You can also run Linux in a Virtual Machine.

bummer! there aren't any linux drivers for the printer i've got. :'(

was using slax (which i found really cool :shade: cuz you can customize your own livecd and download it instantly ), but sadly no working drivers.

wish there was some way i could use the windows drivers in linux (like the ones they have for wireless cards nowerdays) :undecided:

Actually, there's a project called GnuWin32. There're many packages that came to Win32 from Unix. Among them - barcode. It contains sample.exe, which prints out several barcodes just to show it can. Also there's a barcode.exe - a CLI application capable of "printing" barcodes (its outputs is a PostScript doc). Also there's a barcode.dll in case you don't want to use CLI backend.
Provided that it has really simple API - it's really simple to create a Qt-based application for printing barcodes. Not sure it will be compatible with kbarcode, or it will have a preview in it, but it would work ;-)

Nice idea. But its not suitable for a person with little or no programming knowledge. :-(
