Konqueror: can't access localhost

Thu Mar 19, 2009 11:07 am
Hi, I'm having problems with KDE on Windows' Konqueror (KDE 4.2.1, Vista).

I can browse the internet, but when I try to load pages on my apache web server using http://localhost/ , all I get is a 30 second attempt to connect (which doesn't register as a request in the server logs), followed by the following response:

The requested operation could not be completed.
Connection to server refused.
Additional information: localhost: unknown error.

It doesn't seem to be a firewall issue.

I can get through quickly using http://127.0.0.1/ but that's no use to me, as I have the server set up to reject numerical host names and one of my applications looks for the host name localhost so that I can browse it from the same machine.

Should there be a hosts file somewhere with a line it like '127.0.0.1 localhost'? And, if so, where: c:/kde4/etc or in the appdata .kde/share/config/? I have one in /windows/

The machine has two network cards, btw: one for the LAN and one for a broadband router; and I have Konqueror set up as 'use Firefox settings' and 'direct connection to internet.'

Many thanks in advance,
eric t.

You could try using the name of the computer instead: http:///

Thanks. I just tried that, but with the same result as http : // localhost /. Again, my computer name is in the /windows/hosts file and everything works ok for visitors to the web site and for me browsing the intranet using IE or Firefox.

Cheers, eric t.

Does it have any effect if you disable / disconnect one of the network cards so only one is active?

Hi again, I disabled the LAN network card and disconnected the lead, to no avail. 127.0.0.1 brings up a 403:Forbidden response from my server straight away, which is as expected (numerical host names blocked). But localhost and mypcname just spend around 30 seconds trying to connect, but not registering as a GET at the server before the error page appears. Can't disable the router just now as the server's online.

I also closed other web browsers.

I did wonder whether it might be something to do with having a multi-homed machine (ie multiple addresses), yes. Or to do with host lookup.

I just typed in one or two addresses in the local ip range that don't exist on this machine and I get the same error. Konqueror doesn't tell me that the host can't be found.

Thanks again,
eric t.

It definitely seems to not be checking your hosts file. Please file a bug at bugs.kde.org, if one does not already exist.

OK, will do. It's Bug 187731.
