Hi folks,
This may sound really thick so please bear with me!! I downloaded KDE on my windows vista machine meaning that the applications are in the start menu, however the reason I wanted it was so I could use Kate (which isn't on the applications list). Consequently I've downloaded the Kdesk file which has Kate in it, but how do I get Kate installed and up and running from the Kdesk file? Much appreciated. Helen |

i am not familiar with the Windows installation, but the kdesdk package is going to have several dependencies like kdebase, kdebase-runtime, kdelibs and i think kdepimlibs as well. and of course qt if it was not included in the install.

As vbatts suggested, you can't just install kdesdk alone - it has a lot of dependencies, which are tracked by installer and you may check only kdesdk for installation, the rest will do the installer. Try it yourself - Uninstall the whole KDE installation (run the installer again and chose Uninstall option at the beginning). then rerun installer and chose the latest release. There, among all other packages check only kdesdk.
Press "next" and the next screen should show you required dependencies. This way you'll definitely get the minimal install of KDE that can provide you with Kate. |

Great managed that one!
...now how do I get the compiler part to work in Kate so I can do C programming? Cheers! |

I don't think that kate has a compiler part, it's just an editor
