When I try to add the microbloggig widget to plasma desktop it crashes plasma-desktop. Any help resolving this would be appreciated.

Firstly, this should better be discussed on #kde-windows channel of irc.freenode.org IRC network.
To try to help developers in better way you should compile KDE and Plasma yourself in Debug mode so that there's a useful debug symbols in the binaries. With debug symbols copiled in one can provide backtrace of the crashed application. But surely, not everyone would want to build KDE themselves and the backtrace won't guarantee you that thebug will be fixed. And since Plasma is not yet officially supported on Windows you shouldn't file any bugreports on bugs.kde.org.
The only thing you're actually left with (if you're not a C++/KDE programmer) is to wait for thissituation to improve with next release and remind developers on IRC about this bug.
