What is the error message being output by the VLC backend?
If it is the "Cannot find libVLC" message, then the loading of the VLC backend is aborted, likely triggering Phonon's fallbacks, causing DirectSound to be used instead.

I just see the generic "Cannot find the plugin 'VLC' for application 'systemsettings'" error. I don't see a VLC error. Sounds like a .desktop issue.
Does Amarok open for anyone at the moment in Windows? |

Actually now I can get through the plugin errors if I keep clicking 'OK' or hold down the enter key. I suppose before I was just impatient.
Then it crashes on MySQL... |

Hi all,
I used Linux in my younger years and loved Amarok to death ages ago. I would love to use it on Windows but despite my best efforts I have this problem as well. It seems that phonon is just broken! It will not detect any output devices for any of the categories, as well as returning the typical "shared library was not found" error for the VLC backend. Without any found devices, MPlayer backend does little good either. I noticed that I had to run the KDE installer as admin to get it to work; I've been trying that with Amarok as well. Still no dice. None of the solutions proffered thus far will work, some point to broken links or are otherwise unhelpful. What's the deal? I'm sure someone with the correct expertise that I lack in Windows matters could sort this out. Cheers and TIA, Dachnaz |

A first stable release of Phonon VLC backend has been shipped:
http://fboudra.free.fr/wordpress/?p=25 a new KDE SC release (4.5) is happening soon, and a newer version of the KDE for Windows Installer (0.7.0) has been in beta for some time. I would expect a good packaged version in the next month (just a guess, I'm not a developer). Regards, Diego |

Alright, took me a while to get it working, but amarok 2.3.1 plays just like in Linux.
Do not use the VLC 1.1.0 version in the repository, it crashes on phonon load. I used vlc nightly http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/trunk-/ (1.2.0) adding the VLC to %PATH%, spaces do not matter. The alleged registry entry does not exist in the multiple versions of vlc that I installed trying to get this to work. |
