Hi everyone, I'm a new user, living in Dunedin, New Zealand. I'm TOTALLY new to KDE and Linux distros (?) but am giving it a go, on a Windows 7 system with KDE for Windows. I've recently been trying out RawTherapee, a Windows app, and a Photo RAW file editor, on the user forum of which someone suggested that if someone was "only" interested in Depth of Field then he should get DigiKam, which I've done (I think, after 6-7 attempts to download stuff, finally replying "ignore" to the last message, only to see it proceed, apparently successfully -- que??). Anyhow, I am using V4.4 of KDE for Windows. I went through what I thought was the procedure and ended up, initially, with a lot of smaller desktop applications (after "asking" for I got the English language Office pack -- hey, have to make sure the apps I get are in English don't I -- being, only, English speaking). Well, now I seem to have "successfully" downloaded and installed digiKam and showFoto -- haven't had a look yet at digiKam, but showFoto looks absolutely great!!! Learning more about "photography" (image analysis and manipulation) than I ever knew existed before.
Problem is, along the way I seem to have collected over 600Mb in application files -- not including any photos of my own yet, and I'd like to try to keep as much of my hard disk free, for photos, videos etc, as I can. How can I make sure that when I go to delete ?unnecessary apps that I don't want that I won't delete anything I really need for the graphics apps - I seem to have also, somehow, along the way, picked up things like educational apps, games apps, Akonadi console, and a selection of Internet apps, and Utilies, as well as the Office apps -- not things I wanted or need. Best wishes, and thanks in anticipation, (sorry for cross-posting to the Graphics group, but it seems to cross both areas). RustyRiley Dunedin, New Zealand |

The KDE Windows installer will have also downloaded a cache of archive files, which can be safely deleted. To change what you have installed, simply re-run the installer

Since you say you are interested in learning about photography, look out for a set of links that should appear on http://userbase.kde.org/Applications/Graphics in the next day or two. There are for a set of tutorials on photo editing using showfoto. They are just undergoing final checks before uploading.

Many thanks, will keep an eye out, but am having recurrent probs with downloading and setting up apps using KDE for Windows. Think its KDEW which is the prob -- "cooksley" suggested that if I ran the installer again everything would be OK but no way -- used "delete" but it didn't give me any option WHAT to delete, it just deleted everything (I think -- nothing would run off the Windows Start menu, the directory structure was left intact, but no files seemed to exist at the "root" level of any directory tree. Am trying to run it again, but keep on getting error messages (which I could send -- have captured one but can't figure out how to send it, anyhow it just says "The download of failed with error: server configuration error - invalid download URL" after already having sent some stuff down -- not sure if this is just a problem with the internet link -- have unlimited download limit, but that's balanced against VERY low speeds sometimes, hence being up at this time. Best wishes, the photography tutes' yours? Cool!! Rusty |

Incidentally, am using Win 7 64-bit -- the programmed selection box isn't up to date yet. |

Sorry, but your suggestions haven't worked -- see reply to annew re photography tutorials: note I think I read somewhere that KDEW isn't finished yet? Maybe this is a bug with that, and note also that I'm using Win 7 64-bit, maybe that's another prob, too? maybe this is really something that needs to be reported to "bugs" do you think? Best wishes, Russell have been using "ignore" when I get error messages since it seems to continue on when I do, downloading more and more files, I think except when I get too frustrated or tired/fed up when I do. |

You may wish to ask the KDE Windows team what is wrong, it could possibly be the mirror you were using was down. kde-windows@kde.org.

thanks, without asking the Windows team, it appears on further inspection of the relevant apps write ups that info does get a bit scattered -- it appears, though it's not stated "clearly" anywhere, that things like ExpoBlending in digiKam haven't been compiled successfully before, though it's claimed they are in the new version 1.2.0, which is not yet compiled for Windows, but are said to be in future. The same goes for the KDE for Windows installer itself, though it's not stated anywhere I can find it easily what problems have been experienced -- interestingly enough, different download sites do indeed seem to operate differently -- the German winkde that I used early this morning seems to return saying only 57 packages need to be downloaded, some other sites I've seen have said up to 76! I uninstalled and re-installed and now have "working" copies of digiKam and showFoto, though still with some limited education, internet, and games apps --- nothing's ever easy or straight forward it seems, but it's an interesting learning exercise (the downloads take up over 1/2 Gb on the hard disk -- bit better than the 1.13Gb I had at one stage, though still very much more than what I was expecting initially. Thanks for the follow up, Best wishes, Russell |

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie in the KDE world and i need some help. I'am looking to incorporate KDE on my windows 7 64 bit. Now this is my first time i would be doing this, and the thing is my pc has all my applications like adobe suite, office, quick books etc. and i use this pc for work. Will the incorporation of KDE affect in any way in a negative way?? meaning that might spoil some programs or something?? or everything should run normally? and if it does not work can i go back?? like i said this is my work pc and i cant afford to mess it up, but i really want to get kde, I've seen it work in my friend computer and I like it very much.
Thanks to all and forgive me if I'm in the wrong place. |

KDE on Windows is very self-contained. It won't touch any of your other programs. Just download the installer off of the KDE for Windows project page and run it (not the simplest installation, but you should be able to figure it out). It will download the necessary files to a temporary folder in the same directory as the installer program, install everything necessary inside of the install directory, and add a settings directory in your user's application data directory.
