Is KDE on Windows still alive?

Tue Dec 07, 2010 5:03 pm
I know this question sucks, but there still is no KDE 4.5 for Windows, and 4.6 is already due in late January. 19 out of 49 items on the build overview still give an error. How many people are working on this? Unfortunately I'm no programmer so I can't help, but I do use some KDE programs on Windows, so I'd like to know.

Hi Arathorn,

KDE on Windows is still alive.
For the last few release we didn't update our 3part dependency's and so had now a lot of work only updating those library's.
Also we updated our build system to make it more easy to release a new version of KDE.
Those changes will be ready soon and the next release is close.
So stay patient and hold on.

Greetings

In other words, the project has been in hibernation while the developers have been sorting out dependency and build issues. Most of those seem to be resolved and we should hopefully be able to see a 4.6 release in January.

BTW, the dashboard hasn't been updated in quite a while, so I don't think it works with the new build system.

Thank you, I didn't expect so quick a reply. Does this mean 4.5 will be skipped? Not that I'd miss that particular version, but I'm curious.
I thought the dashboard was something automatic for nightly builds, guess I was wrong. :)

Hm, no we will try to get out 4.5.4 now, since 4.6.0 is still a bit away.
I switched off the nightly builds because there was no easy way to update them. They will hopefully be switched on after the release.

If anybody wants to help with the release effort:
http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/kde-windo ... 05385.html

I'd like to thank everybody involved.

Can I help with any not-technical aspect (e.g. write the news for windows.kde.org and article for the dot)?

Hello,

Thank you guys for KDE releases on Windows. I mostly use Amarok, but I'd like some Plasma too. Right now I use 4.5.4 release on Windows 7 64 bit and Plasma doesn't show in front of the desktop. Is this normal?
I can't wait 4.6 releases ;D .
Btw, do you have in mind some portable configuration and deploy for Kopete?
I would like to have one folder with it on a stick or USB hard drive, with both binaries, for Linux and Windows, to start it everywhere I go on Windows (at least) and home on my Mandirva and Gentoo boxes?

Thanks.

I was wondering this too. I have 4.5.4 installed, but lately when I run Installer 0.9.8-1 to check for updates, I get this error...

"failed to download site list page from http://downloads.sourceforge.net/kde-windows/"

...which results in a full crash of the installer...

I'm on Win XP Pro SP3.

Try selecting a different mirror (for testing purposes, try switching to the winkde.org mirror which is the main mirror. If that works then switch to one of the other mirrors).

How do I do that? I am not able to do so in Installer before it crashes...
