Hi all, I am new here so please don't sue me if ask stupid question(s)..
So, to start, I first installed kde on windows and all, and after checking http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=94449, I got it running fine with plasma, but just in a while I noticed that dophin was acting funny. What I found out was for some files (multimedia i.e. audio/video) it either just starts the application (like vlc) without playing the specified file or shows a open with file dialog.. Also, in the kde package I installed I didn't opt for amarok. So when I run any audio file, it just opens up VLC media player but nothing plays, (see the screenshots attached for more details) and when I browse for wmp, it says "'C:\Program File\Window Media Player\wmplayer.exe' not found. Please type a valid program name" (again see screenshot attached) and same for video file, say I open file.flv (or file.avi) it just simply opens up vlc without any file, but when I click the "open with" dialog and select "vlc" (highlighted by default) it plays. Btw, I already had vlc 1.1.11 installed but when I installed KDE it couldn't detect it or what, it installed vlc 1.1.05 in the "KDE package" So, any ideas what is going on, and how can I fix this? |

The "Open with file..." dialog likely means that KDE does not know of an application to use. The problem with Windows Media Player is linked to KDE applications not being used to handling paths with spaces in them, which is causing bugs now unfortunately.
As a workaround, place the path to the executable in quotes.

First, thanx for your reply bcooksley
I kinda guessed it.
I already did that, see the screenshot 5, I have written "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" with quotes For video files, I think the problem could be that I already have vlc 1.1.11 installed, while KDE installed vlc 1.1.05, so it couldn't start the right one with correct parameter or something related.. But that's just a fuzzy guess, the problem is still there, so any more ideas??? |

Well I'm a beginner to KDE on Windows as well.
However, I did find a "solution/workaround" around this problem. Go to C:\Program Files\KDE\share\applications\kde4 and add your applications. (I'm still not sure if this step is necessary, but I do it anyway). Then go to the Menu Editor by right-clicking on the KDE Application Launcher and add your programs in it there. Use relative paths. For example, for LibreOffice Writer I use the command
I've found that these Menu items seem to disappear but then show up in Lost & Found, so keep note of this. Then go into File Associations and add your applications from there. Relevant bug report: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=183153 |

Actually, I just realised the only step you need to do is the first. Create a .desktop file in C:\Program Files\KDE\share\applications\kde4 and it should automatically be added to the appropiate categories (that you specify in the file).
