Some minor problems with Kile

Mon Mar 05, 2012 12:19 am
So, I am trying to get Kile up and running on windows, and have had some succes. The packages that I've installed by use of KDE on Windows are: kde-baseapps, kde-workspace, kdegraphics, kdesdk, and Kile. When I run the system check tool, it tells me that Acroread, Bibtex, DVItoPS, and PDFLaTeX "Failed, but but critical", whereas Okular gives a "Critical failure, Kile will not function properly". Apparently Kile cannot find the binary for Okular. I'm guessing my problem is related to this, and that I somehow have to tell Kile where Okular is located or something similar? I'm asking mainly our of curiosity, since it seems that Kile is working anyway (?)

I also get some funny errors when I use sloppy syntax. For instance, if I don't have a blank line immediately after the \documentclass stuff or put too many packages in any single \usepackage line, Kile crashes after compiling. I've had this problem on two computers, one running win7, the other XP. Don't know if this is a well-known bug or what, just thought I'd mention it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

And if any of the guys responsible for developing KDE on windows or Kile ever visit here, thanks for doing an awesome job!

Edit: apparently Kile also crashes if I don't press the view button (selecting for instance forwardPDF) before compiling, or if I use the fonts mathbb or mathfrak. In the case with the fonts, it compiles, shows me the result, but then crashes momentarily thereafter. Might this be related to the Okular problem described above?

Are you using the KDE on Windows installer, or self-compiling the above software?

If using the KDE on Windows installer - Okular is simply an application which can be installed through that. It is part of the kdegraphics module.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm using the KDE on windows installer. I have the kdegraphics package installed, and I am able to open okular seperately.

Edit: Also, when showing PDF files in Kile, it uses Okular, so obviously something is installed. It seems like things work as they should if I always run the bibtex compile tool before compiling anything else. For instance, if I change

\bibliography{References}
\end{document}

into

\bibliography{References}

\end{document}

and compile PDFLaTeX, it crashes. But if I do the same, then run BibTeX, then PDFLaTeX, it doesn't crash.

EDIT2: Since I have automatic clean-up enabled, this means that whenever I compile anything the first time around, Kile crashes (since I can't use BibTeX without an .aux file present). But then, since Kile crashed and didn't do the clean-up, I can use BibTeX the second time around and then compile after that.

Okay, it is probably best to defer to the Kile folks and the KDE on Windows developers here.

Also having this... you call this minor?
My Kile crashes almost every time when I do a clean+compile... and putting extra blank lines and putting all the packages on a separate line didn't help.

Not sure what causes it though. This time, it even crashed *after* compiling was successfully finished.

Also, in case relevant (and to verify we're talking about the same issue), the "Details:" mentions "Executable: kile.EXE PID: 2012 Signal: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005)" where the 2012 is different every time, but the 0xc0000005 is always the same address!

Also, what seems to have helped in my case is to disable the "run additional tools" in the pdflatex configuration in settings->configure kile->tools->build.

I was also having the problems with Kile crashing on almost every compile. I disabled the "run additional tools" option and it seems to work fine now.
