Where is Kate now? I installed but it's nowhere to be found

Hi, I used MacPorts to install kate. It looked good:
---> Attempting to fetch kate-4.12.2_0.darwin_12.x86_64.tbz2.rmd160 from http://packages.macports.org/kate
---> Installing kate @4.12.2_0
---> Activating kate @4.12.2_0

Don't forget that dbus needs to be started as the local user (not with sudo)
before any KDE programs will launch.
To start it run the following command:
launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchAgents/org.freedesktop.dbus-session.plist

---> Cleaning kate
---> Updating database of binaries: 100.0%
---> Scanning binaries for linking errors: 100.0%
---> No broken files found.

But there is no "kate" in /opt/local/bin/kate -- where is the editor? Anyone have a clue for me? 8)
Thanks.

Does Macports usually install it's binaries to /opt/local?
Can you find other KDE related processes (such as kde4-config, kded4, etc) in /opt/local/bin/?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, MacPorts uses /opt/local as a sort of "/usr/local" working area.

Can you find other KDE related processes (such as kde4-config, kded4, etc) in /opt/local/bin/?

Yes.
cook47@rcmac (~): ls /opt/local/bin/kde*
/opt/local/bin/kde4-config /opt/local/bin/kdeinit4_wrapper
/opt/local/bin/kdeinit4_shutdown /opt/local/bin/kdestroy

Also note:
cook47@rcmac (~): find /opt/local/ -name 'kate' 2>/dev/null
/opt/local//include/kate
/opt/local//share/apps/kate
/opt/local//var/macports/software/kate
/opt/local//var/macports/sources/rsync.macports.org/release/tarballs/ports/kde/kate

Hm, unusual - does Macports keep any log files of the build/installation process which you could pastebin and post here?

thanks for engaging with me on this question. Your question prompted me to explore macports' command line options, and there is one that I used to find the answer:

Code: Select all
port contents kate

The results were enlightening.

Code: Select all
cook47@rcmac (kate): port contents kate
Port kate contains:
  /Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/kate.app/Contents/Info.plist
  /Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/kate.app/Contents/MacOS/kate
  /Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/kate.app/Contents/MacOS/kate.shell
  /Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/kwrite.app/Contents/Info.plist
  /Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/kwrite.app/Contents/MacOS/kwrite
  /Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/kwrite.app/Contents/MacOS/kwrite.shell
  /Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/kwrite.app/Contents/Resources/kwrite_KDEINIT_SRCS.icns
  /opt/local/include/kate/application.h
  /opt/local/include/kate/documentmanager.h
etc etc

So I can see that a Mac OS application is created. As a command-line kind of guy, I know that I can simply set my EDITOR to /Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/kate.app/Contents/MacOS/kate and things will work the way I want.
Thanks for asking the questions to lead to the answer.

Not a problem - rather interesting to see that KDE applications are beginning to be registered as fully fledged Mac OS X applications now.

Yes, I was surprised to see "apps" showing up in MacPorts. Seems like the opposite of its intent, since the GUI does not use X11, but there is no doubt that this is a Mac port! :-)
cheers
